Bikes: I don't own any bikes

So last night I tried my first real ride in dirt... one of my old usual mountain bike rides... sad to say too soon. First off, I was too tenantive which in mountain biking is dangerous. I walked anything iffy but it hurt to walk. I finished the ride with one long climb... I was done after. Don't think I did more than 4 miles, maybe 5... and after, my ankle became a cankle... I think the swelling came from all the walking on uneven surfaces...

Oh well, back to streets and bike paths for awhile although I really want to try another trail I've been missing. It's not as techical although there are some steep climbs. The climbs don't seem to bother me as much as the technical, uneven surfaces... I just don't have the strength in my legs to get over obstacles! Going through physical therapy... as of now, I can not balance on my right leg with it collapsing... need to keep at those exercizes!

keep up the good work, don't push too hard yet. Just get it used to moving again and range of motion

Keep up the good work, but don't push too hard and mess something up!
Keep in mind that you aren't riding one of your "fast" bikes, so it's going to take more work to do the same miles.

Things will "loosen up" and the pain will lessen. Just give it a chance.
I still have small issues in my ankle because of the screws from my intramedullary nailing of the tibia after 2-1/2 years, but it slowly gets better.

crikey! That's not what I wanted to hear!

Question: do you still have any difficulty walking? Cycling seems to be coming back to me but walking I am struggling... still alot of pain and the ankle is so stiff. I try to walk normal and can for about 3 - 4 steps then I revert back to Fester from Gunsmoke (who remembers him other than me!). I keep working on flexibility exercises but the pain is constant...

1st- I'm an old guy (67 now) so we don't heal as fast.
I do have issues walking because of the ankle. Not cycling though.
Maybe if I simply walked more, but my emphysema restricts that.
I had the "rod" driven in through my R. knee. (It was already bad from a "motorcycle escapade 30+ years before) No additional problems with the knee.

Pam, maybe you should take up road cycling. I'm ten years younger than you and I quit riding a mtb nearly ten years ago.

I started out as a roadie... I still do it but traffic and fear of being killed by a texting teenager drove me to do more mountain biking. Right now I am basically road riding on a mountain biking but I am staying on all the bike paths/trails which thankfully there are alot. I have too much money invested in mountain bikes to give it up! But I will take it slowly...

Did a longer ride yesterday... first I don't think it was the distance or terrain that killed me... it was 95 friggin degrees and I hate heat. I did 8 miles about 800 ft of climbing. Leg and ankle hurt so I stopped and took breaks. But again the heat was my enemy. Came home and iced the ankle and feel better today... but I also am not riding today... giving myself a break since its going to be 100 today... Fall temperatures please come soon!
