The commute:
Since I'm dropping the kid off at school and going into the office both tomorrow and Friday, that means a total commuting distance of 9 miles (kid rides 2 miles of it with me) each way. Twice in the day, two days = 36 miles basically automatically.
I have one day this week (today!) to get in a non-commute ride, since spouse is out of town until Friday night and the babysitter comes once a week. So I can get in a rainy ride tonight -- probably can't count on more than 30 miles in the rain and dark. 30 would be a stretch and this is a stretch goal, let's call it that.
We're up to 66 miles. Which puts us at 282 actually. That leaves this Saturday. If I can find a way to get out and do 18 miles on Saturday (my require sneaking away in the early hours), that would be 300 for the month -- by far my biggest month to date.
So, let's call my stretch goal 300 miles for the month.

10/1 27.3 miles, 1,588ft^
The weekly errands with some climbing thrown in.
10/2 24.9 miles, 131ft^
Impromptu 40k attempt, but way too many stoplights before the MUP for it to be decent (or indicative of anything.)
Got good numbers for my LTHR on the mid-portion of the trail though.
10/2 25.5 miles, 682ft^
The ride home after the 40k nonsense.
10/3 5.6 miles, 158ft^
Leisurely morning ride with my daughter.
10/3 15.9 miles, 486ft^
Too much energy left over after the morning cruise. Neighborhood hot laps.
10/5 26.4 miles, 3,383ft^
Was falling behind on climbing, so I decided to do a whole bunch of it all at once.
10/6 75.5 miles, 2,149ft^
Woke up and figured I could knock out the Gran Fondo for the month. Got stung by a bee at mile 67. :|
10/8 39.7 miles, 1,991ft^
Circuit course I've done many times. Good mix of climbs and descents.
10/9 31.6 miles, 1,302ft^
Another loop course, out past the college and home. Zone 2 ride, managed to do 70% of the ride under 128bpm.
10/10 33.9 miles, 1,155ft^
Must have been feeling pretty good following the previous Zone 2 day, because I was just blasting the whole way.
Finished with a 17.7mph average, amazing as maybe 5 miles of it was on the trail, so I fought stop lights the
whole time.
10/12 62.3 miles, 2,546ft^
Didn't ride Sunday, so I decided to do a Metric, just because why not? Waaaayyyy hotter than forecast, so I ran out of water, started to hurt. Luckily I managed to make it to my vinyl shop and get my bottles refilled. Supposed to be mid-80s, instead it was 99º. Drank both bottles in the last 9 miles home.
10/13 32.3 miles, 837ft^
Recovery day, Zone 2.
10/14 43.6 miles, 1,220ft^
My SART + Riverside route, in reverse.
10/15 32.3 miles, 1,020ft^
Weekly errands. Killed an hour at the LBS.
10/16 50.0 miles, 2,795ft^
Rode 25 miles out to my brother-in-law's house to fix his gutters (with a backpack full of tools) then rode 25 miles back. TIRED.
10/17 26.4 miles, 797ft^
Easy morning ride with the wife.
10/19 45.1 miles, 2,231ft^
Sunset loop in reverse.
10/20 65.0 miles, 2,864ft^
The metric for the week.
10/22 48.2 miles, 1,808ft^
Just rode around. Literally. Absolutely no plan leaving the house.
10/23 31.1 miles, 1,355ft^
Wife had the day off, went on an easy one.
10/24 40.0 miles, 669ft^
Took the wife out for two days in a row! She ran out of gas about 7 miles from home.
10/26 79.0 miles, 5,007ft^
Planned on a metric, misjudged the route, and ended up going on a journey of questionable decisions. That ride was ROUGH.
10/27 27.1 miles, 820ft^
Probably should have just had a nap, but went out for an easy spin anyway.
MTD: 890.0 miles, 36,985ft^
I'm having a tough time wrapping my brain around the fact that I have almost 900 miles for the month.

Well, between going out of town on the weekends, rain, and cold, this month has not been very kind to my miles. But I'm still riding, looking forward to my rides, and feeling guilty when I'm not riding. I just want to make sure that I don't get out of the habit of riding, and start making excuses about why I shouldn't ride, instead of just HTFU and riding.

I'm sucking this month for my usual mileage. Only 377 miles so far. I think I did 560 miles last October.
I've started this Primal Blueprint plan and he goes on about chronic cardio/repeatedly burning glycogen stores being bad for you. As a result, I've been riding fewer miles on fewer days and much less intensity. Weird thing is I'm losing weight again for the first time this year...
I need to work in some interval training, but haven't gotten there yet.

Wow, close to home. My folks lived a mile south of the shopping center; 3 of my younger siblings went to Lake Braddock. I still have a brother that lives just south of Kings Park on Forrester and a sister who lives in Kingstowne.

241 mi and 15,204 ft so far I was planning on doing GMR and the ski lifts tomorrow for my 65th and to break 20k ft for a month.
That's off now.
The forecast is for wind gusts to 35 mph. may be crazy, but I'm not stupid

!63 miles for October. Spent way more time on the trainer than I like this month. Got a 28 mile ride in today. My feet were very cold. Guess I need to look for warmer shoes.

Went out of town, but found a Halloween Group Ride on Saturday. Several interesting things about the ride, Pumpkin Pedaller.
1. A Nasty Climb. At least for me used to rolling hills, and then going to Asheville, NC, which is in the mountains. The climb was 362' in 1.3 miles, with literally half of that (181') being in 1/2 mile. I made it, but I had to rest a few times on that .5 mile. The climb did spread out the group ride, as up to this point, it was very crowded, and the ride up to this climb was easier than the beginner ride at Performance Bikes that I normally do.
2. Unfortunately, the downhill had a lot of switchbacks, so you couldn't get the full benefit of coasting down the hill.
3. On a greenway going through a park there was a bottleneck where I had to brake really quickly, and then have a 3' rise in about 10' where I stood up on the pedals. Unfortunately, I broke a chain, and in the process, the small chainring got bent along with a couple of teeth. I did get some help from people with chain tools, but, unfortunately, the first person and I threaded the chain through the rear derailleur incorrectly. Luckily the sweeper (The Grim Reaper) had a chain tool, also. So we were able to get that straightened out. The master link on the chain seemed to be stuck as we couldn't get it to release, and none of us had any pliers. So we just used a chain tool to undo the chain, thread it correctly, and then redo the chain. Unfortunately, after that I couldn't go more than 1 revolution with the chain on the small ring. It took us a while, but I finally saw where the chainring was bent, so I had to finish the ride in just the big gear (50t).
4. Luckily the next part of the ride was on greenways, so that was pretty level, and having the chain in the big chainring wasn't too bad. But from the end of the greenway to the end of the ride was all uphill (135' in .6 miles for 4% grade average). That almost felt worse than the first nasty climb.
5. The ride ended at a bar. (The beginning point was about .5 miles away, but I parked at the end point, and rode to the beginning to warm up.) After what happened with the chain and small chainring, I had a beer.
6. There were a lot of people dressed up in costumes, and at the end point there was bicycle jousting. That was on special bicycles with shoulder pads and helmets more substantial then normal cycling helmets. The special bicycles looked like 2 children frames that were welded togethere, so that the seat was higher than a normal bicycle seat, but the wheels were probably only 24" wheels (or smaller).

I didn't quite make the 300 (woke up too late to bike commute one day, didn't manage to sneak out Saturday), but I did make it up to 261, which is the most I've done in a month since I started tracking. So, I'm happy, overall.
For November, with the dark, Thanksgiving and travel for work, I'll be lucky to get in 150.
For November, with the dark, Thanksgiving and travel for work, I'll be lucky to get in 150.
Very true, and this is actually a pretty decent week to rack up the miles for various reasons. Let's calculate. I'm at 216 right now.

Eight CX races in the books this month. Best finish was third. Logged a little over 500 miles between racing and training and just passed 6,000 miles for the year.
