Orthotics in road cycling shoes?

No I am not talking about the custom made orthotics that a foot doc would make for you as they are too rigid and take up too much space in the shoe.

Yes I am talking about the orthotic insoles such as Superfeet. I went to the Superfeet insoles for my every day walking, working, etc... shoes when the custom made orthotics caused more issues than they solved, and have been very happy with them (I was diagnosed with planters fasciitis some years ago).

My question is would one remove the insole from the riding shoe (road shoes in my case) and replace them with the Superfeet or other insole style orthotic like the Dr. Scholl's or others out there? Would there be any negative aspects to doing this?

I really am thinking about buying a set of superfeet to try this with as that would get my whole foot making contact with the shoe instead of leaving my arch unsupported.

Ideas? Comments?

Thank you,
Dave

yes, yes, and yes. SuperFeet fan for years. I have them in every athletic item I put on my feet (from hockey skates, cycling shoes, running shoes, ski boots, you name it -- I wear green SuperFeet)

Yes.

I've replaced the insoles in a couple of pair of cycling shoes and they work great. Also have a pair of road shoes that I left the original insoles in (they had no arch whatsoever) and added the insoles over them to get a better fit.

You may have fit problems - the insole in my Sidis is incredibly thin. I put insoles in for a while, which made it hard to get the shoes on. Try it and see!

Thank you all for the replies. I generally buy the Green Superfeet, but they do make thinner ones that might work better in the road shoes.

Looks like REI will be getting an order soon.

I had used superfeet green in my shoes at one point, my podiatrist took them out and told me they were taking up valuable space. My feet feel better for it. If you don't have wide feet you may be okay, if you do then be mindful of how much room you have in there.

Well, *now* you tell me!
I've been using the orthotics my podiatrist made, in various cycling shoes for 10 years.
(And yes, I remove the insoles that came in the shoes.)

My reasoning for not using the ones the doc made me is that they actually feel like they are compounding the problem unless I am walking on level flat ground. I went to a different podiatrist and we tried to make these work, but in the end he handed me a product much like Superfeet and they worked very well for me (as in night and day, and instantly being pain free from the planters fasciitis).

I have been using Superfeet ever since with great results.

Another Superfeet fan here. I use them in my Shimano MT34 MTB shoes which have plenty of room in the toe box and arch and they work great both on and off the bike. I also use them in my trail running/hiking shoes and my duty boots. Best investment ever, work better than my prescription orthotics.
