True Comfort on a Bicycle

Yeah it is an important discussion to have. How you define comfort is paramount to determining if it is achievable. Making the comparison of a bicycle saddle and a lazy Boy is like comparing apples and oranges. The purpose of a saddle perhaps should first be determined before making a decision as to comfort. The purpose of an easy chair is not very close to the purpose of a bike saddle. A bike saddle is designed to support part of the riders weight without interfering with movement of the legs. Saddles are made in a variety of shapes designed for different styles of riding. For me the definition of comfort on a bike saddle is absence of pain for long periods of time. However it is much more than just the absence of pain, I feel comfortable on a saddle. Riding a bike brings me peace.

The question that seems to get asked lots on this forum is how does a rider of larger size and or weight find comfort on a bike saddle. Is it even possible? The answers are many and not exactly clear cut however much can be learned from those that have found comfort. Perhaps just as much can be learned from those that have not found comfort on what will not work. Many who have found comfort utilized the services of a bike fitter. A bike fitter if experienced will notice things that riders might not ever think of. Whatever the rule of thumb there are folks that seem to not fit the ideal, after all we are all individual. it is my contention that this is even more reason to enlist the skills and experience of a fitter. Slight changes can make huge differences in comfort. Some folks simply need an alternative bike style or recumbent bike or trike. The good news is that many have found comfort after trial, change, trial. I submit for most people comfort is achievable.

One other concern that should not be overlooked is how soon comfort should be expected. Sitting on a bike is different than sitting on a chair, and it is different from walking. It simply takes time for most adults to get comfortable on a bike. Repetition and frequency may be a determining factor. 20 minutes at a time once or twice a week will make it nearly impossible to ever achieve comfort. Endurance in all things takes time to develop. Often working through discomfort leads to comfort in the end.

My ass hurts sitting in a lazy boy if I sit there too long, so a recumbent has its problems also. Standing periodically helps a lot with saddle pain, but in the "end", time in the saddle is the best remedy.

I did a 40k on the trainer this afternoon (0:56:40) without the cadence dropping below 90 or lifting my butt off the saddle, so I'd say it's comfortable enough. Took 10 months, 4 saddles, and 3 seatposts to get here, but there you have it.
