I did at first when I couldn't determine which side I favored, but now that I know I like to lean to the left with the bike, I just unclip the left foot.

Whenever this topic is brought up I think about the cleats I wore with clips and straps. They were Cinelli block cleats. About an inch thick plastic block molded to the shape of the campagnolo pedal spindle. Once you were in, which required pulling up on the clip itself, you were in. Fell many times with those, just couldn't get my foot out. But I was young and durable back then. Today's clipless pedals are a snap in comparison.

I rode clipless (SPD) on a spin bike for a while, which got me used to clipping in and out. I guess that got me used to the actions in a low-stress environment. I haven't falling while riding clipless in the real world.

I also tend to ride pedals with clipless on one side, platform on the other. So if you ever feel the need to use normal shoes, or just ride clipped for a few minutes, that option is there.

And... I find clipping in is harder than un-clipping. Getting out is easy. It's second nature after a while.
