Pre/Post Ride Warm up/down

There a few actual stretches my body REALLY likes but otherwise I don't do traditional stretching in my off the bike workouts. I was going to say "As I've learned more..." but that statement is individualistic. What I've "learned" may be different than what YOU have "learned" and believe.

So... let's share.

The reason I'm wanting to go above what I WAS doing is that I don't think I did a good job at warming up and warming down. Previously it was a few stretches my body likes (I know when I don't do them enough) and then off I go. When I get done I usually have to hurry to the next thing and don't do a good job warming down.

This Jan. I started doing CrossFit. They have a whole course for average people like me who are looking for functional fitness and improved overall conditioning. I only tell you that because I think they do a GREAT job of warming us up and then warming us down. At first the warmup was almost enough of a workout and I would get winded. I'm over that now. The particular warmup and down that we do is based on the actual skill and workout we will be doing but what it showed me was that it really prepared me for activity to begin, and also started the recovery and injury prevention when it was over.

From that I've been resolving myself to making sure that I do this warmup and down even if I have to cut into my on the bike time.

Or maybe just get my rump out of bed a bit earlier?

I'm going to collect here some stretches I am going to throw into the mix for warmups, warmdowns, and maybe mid-day if I can work them in.

Add yours!

I went to a friend's cross fit studio to try it out and their warm-up was too high impact for me and my lame knee - they put Thunderstruck on and every time ACDC said the words Thunder you had to do a burpee. It was all jumping jacks for the rest of the song but let me tell you - there's a lot of thunder in the song thunderstruck. A lot. I twitch whenever I hear that song now.

Out on the road I don't do anything special to warm up or cool down. The day after a race i like to do a recovery spin, small gear easy cadence, no big effort, not even a small or medium effort, just spin the pedals over. On the trainer I have found that a longer warmup, like say a half hour easy spin helps a bunch.

Post ride I don't stretch nearly enough and almost never right after a ride, the one notable exception is after a LBS spin clas we spend a few minutes stretching. I do almost randomly some stretching that my chiropractor had recommended.

Each facility (box) is different but the one and only that I've gone to has an entry level and then the advanced. The entry level is focused on "functionally fitness" and they do a tremendous job of finding out where you are and how you should adjust the movements before you are allowed to go "full bore".
