Bike Shorts

Hey guys,

I have yet another problem/question. I fixed most of my problems yesterday by going in for a bike fit that took an hour and a half or so and many adjustments were made from the first time I bought the bike, it feels amazing. The other issue I am having is that I upgraded to a cycling kit finally and it worked great for about a month but now the pad keeps moving in the front and causing chafing and pinching in uncomfortable places. Is this because the shorts have become too loose?

Thanks again!

Probably should have included that info. Sorry! I have lost what has leveled out to 9 solid pounds but my size 42 pants fall off me now and I am fitting back into 38-40 at 293 lbs versus 302 lbs but have gained a solid mass of muscle in my legs as well. The shorts I have been using are XL size from Canary.

They "feel" pretty good. The moving chamois and chafing is what is hinting that something is wrong. Makes it hard to ride over 20 miles with a few stops for "adjusting". Guess I should go a size down and see what happens? It very well could be the brand too. I am lost in a nutshell.

My experience is that, when I loose weight it is not the chamois that starts moving, if you get my drift...

When that happens I move one size down on shorts but I not noticed the same effect with bibs, which seems to be more forgiving.

Tried on a size smaller with no luck. Guess 40 dollar shorts just aren't going to cut it.

As 10 Wheels suggested, have you tried chamois cream? Pretty much nothing stick to that.

Shorts are one place where you get what you pay for. Save a few bucks on the jersey. Chances are the cheaper jerseys fit us bigger guys better anyway Spend a few bucks more on shorts that fit, and that have a better chamois. 2 hours of riding in hot weather with cheap shorts and the shorts feel like a wet diaper.

Going to have to just give in and spend the cash. Any recommendations before I throw down 100 bucks?

Aero Tech Designs and you don't have to pop $100 for shorts; even bibs are less than that.

I have heard good things about Aero tech, but never tried them myself. For me, it was just trial and error. My go to shorts right now are a pair of Gore, and a pair of Specialized, both retail for around $100 but purchased on sale for less. I also have a pair of bibs that I bought recently that I am slowly working into the rotation, but unlike some, I don't find them any more, or less comfortable than a decent pair of shorts.

Do NOT use a non-water soluble lubricant on your shorts.

Yes, I was just about to post this in reply to the guy who recommended vaseline / petroleum jelly. Great way to gum up your chamois and destroy your shorts IMHO.

Am I missing a joke here? Vaseline isn't water based or water soluble. In fact it's the opposite, it's water repelling.

That "creamy" stuff is petroleum jelly mixed with water. The issue is that the petroleum jelly part isn't water soluble, so it doesn't wash out of your shorts like a chamois cream would.

**** no. Bibs are expensive and not to be ruined by stupidity or pointless economizing.

I get through one $18 tube of Chamois Butt'r a season usually. Some things aren't worth cheaping out on.

Do you even need Chamois cream riding a bent?
