INPUT Please-

I ride a Specialized Rockhopper with custom rear wheel to support me @#325. Works fine- except at 19" feels a little small.

There are several XL bikes in area for sale. You got any opinions on them for #300 rider?
Will be used for road and gravel/dirt roads. Only hill we have around here is the bridge over harbor..

Giant Cyclocross TCX SLR- Mostly stock..Shimano 105 11x28, 11-speed.. TRP Spyre-C, Mechanical disc, 140mm

2014 Surly Karate Monkey 29er- upgraded to RST First with lockout fork, 1x9 gearing and
Deore XT hydraulic disc brakes. XT cassette, XT Rear derailleur. Deore shifters.. 22" frame

Assuming both fit well, any feelings on best for 6'4" 300# rider at 68 yr old??

I don't have anything to offer but my opinion, but between the two, assuming both fit well, I'd go with the Giant. The 700x35 tire lends better to riding the regular roads than the 29" on the Monkey. Both would probably serve you well. I'd see if you can test ride both and pick the one that feels better.

I guess main question is - will these hold up to #300...I figure they'll have to have a stronger rear wheel. Stock ones usually are impossible to keep true.

Karate Monkey is going to be more rugged all around. And heavier.

Whichever you buy it might be worth having the wheels trued and tensioned before running out for a replacement. Wheels on CX bikes might just surprise you with what abuse they can take.

For what you are talking about, I'd look for something like a Surly Cross Check or a Soma Double Cross.

Steel framed road/gravel type bike with clearance for bigger tires. There are lots of bikes that fit into this type, the Surly/Soma are just a couple.

this would rip and made from nice steel, downside is 650b and finding roadie style tires for it.

2014 JAMIS DRAGON 650 SPORT MOUNTAIN BIKE 21INCH

great entry CX/gravel bike
