Custom seat posts?

Hi all,

My wife and I bought a bike online for my son as a surprise birthday present. He's a BIG guy, and we had trouble finding one that would support his height and weight: he's 6'6" and 370 lbs.

We bought a Firmstrong CA-520 based on the specifications they gave on the website, but the seat post doesn't extend far enough for him. It would have to go up another couple inches, and also curve forward so his arms can reach the handlebars.

Is there a source for replacement seat posts somewhere? Or should we return the bike and continue our search? Recommendations?

He's working hard on getting back into shape, so we really want to encourage him.

Thanks

Without knowing why you need one, it does sound like the bike does not fit.

However, depending on his size, it might not fit until he has lost some weight, so I am not going to make a call on that. (Feel free to post a picture of him on the bike, some of us might have ideas of how to help fit it better, or be sure you need to return the bike)

I would return the bike. If a bike will not fit the rider given the built in component adjustability, you risk going from one problem to the other.

I honestly don't think this kind of frame geometry would work for most people, certainly not tall people, because the seat tube is angled way too far back.

You probably learned the lesson, but I advise against buying a bike (or any other things that depends on fitting or fashion) for someone else without that person's involvement. You see many threads here where people question and doubt their own ability to buy themselves a fitting bike after trying many bikes themselves. there is no way you can find one for someone else.

The bike you describe likely is too small, the short seatpost is just the one things you notice now. Even if he loses weight, his legs still will be long due to bones. So there is no way he can adapt to it. Buying an extension is a workaround that still doesn't make the rest of the bile larger. and as mentioned above, skews the position. At his weight he already is beyond the specified weight limit, extending a seatpost is not good and puts more stress on it.

Return the bike and buy him one with him, or let him buy himself. Your intention was golden and you are a supporting parent.
