may as well make my first post the intro post.

5'9, 245 lbs. Was a 218-lb powerlifter 'back in the day', and by 'back in the day', I mean 'back before I had 2 shoulder reconstruction surgeries, a torn pec, and C6/C7 disk/vertebral replacement surgery'

I rode BMX a lot in my youth, and about 20 years ago I bought myself a Specialized Ground Control and rode the crap out of it. Then I joined the military, got married, and spent too much time deploying and being a soccer Dad. All kids but my youngest are in college and out of the house, I'm about to finally move on from the military, and my injuries have forced me to really re-assess my activities.

I picked up a Trek 820 to ride around off road and show my wife that yes, in fact, I'm serious about this.

There is hope.

After struggling with weight for tears I finally got serious, My high last year was 6'2" 270lbs. Now a year later I'm at 190.

While I'm not sure what a Clydesdale is aside from a type of horse, I'm 6'0 and 238-ish. I'm a domesticated truck driver. You do the math. The DOT is whispering about drivers health so I'm trying to get ahead of the curve. I peaked at 260 and red flags went up. But I was hovering around 250 most of the time.

My Trek 8.4 ds took me down initially, but I love to go fast so my Sectuer is the bike du jour most days. Still love my ds though. Have yet to establish a working pattern. Grrrr.

Guys I need help... I just got the xxxl castelli bib I bought and it's too small. Any recommendations for 4xl cycling bibs. I know there is a whole argument about bibs versus shorts but when you have a belly like mine the bib feels much better. Any and all help appreciated.

5'6" weighed in this morning at 218.2lbs. I'm a big boy but I want to get back on 2 wheels. I have a tadpole trike I have been riding with my wife (She has a 2013 Giant Escape RX1 W) and we've gotten ourselves off to a decent start. Our average speed is going up (13.8mph) and we are doing longer rides. We started with short 10 mile rides to just get the feel of if it was something my wife wanted to do. That has escalated to some 17.2 mile rides because that is a convenient turn around point. We recently did a 42.6 mile ride and suffered no ill affects. My problem is, I can't help her when she is tired by letting her draft off me. My tadpole trike hardly feels the wind and I want to be able to drag her up to a higher average speed.

My issue is that a bike seat makes all my boy parts numb and puts me into pain overload. We have an upright stationary trainer and I can only last 30 minutes on it (even with an upgraded seat) before I have to call it quits, and that is with me standing and adjusting every 8-10 minutes.

Any bike and seat recommendations for someone my height with my issues or am I better off staying on my tadpole trike?

Howdy Again
Getting back into riding, from a serious bonk when it was very hot really humid and I started, unfed and unhydrated.
Rode 5.5 miles downhill with a tail wind, killed both waters, rode back uphill with a 12-15 mph
headwind, did not think I was going to make it back without passing out.
Truthfully the only reason I did not call the bride was being a former Marine I could not let my brothers down calling the sag wagon on a 10 mile run.

But I am getting back into shape, been keeping cals under 1900, and slowly getting back into riding, 1.4 yesterday, 4.4 today, My goal is to re ride my Monument ride successfully. And get ready for my Trek Domane 4.0C I put a down payment on.
I had gotten to 255 lbs but had alowed myself to reinflate to 274. I am back down to 265-264.

I will be honest, I truly have to HTFU those 2 short rides hit hard, I am fighting off a virus BUT I was pretty shaky and nautious and had a lot of lower end tingling when I finished today I did a quick and dirty chain and gearset cleaning (and found my tire pump had auto ejected itself :-( ) but had to sit down and sip a chocolate milk.

But I have Goals, (1) easily ride my Monument ride (2) get below 250 and stay in good health through my Turn Around working nights so I will still get to ride ​(3) get and stay at 225 and get well toned and keep that way for my NEXT 50 years.

Train smart rick. You'll do yourself little good to deprive yourself of proper hydration and fuel. Drink a half a bottle of water before you start, wait a half hour for it to pass thru and go. A banana is also a good pre-ride snack. Your body will thank you for the potassium.

Also, you're gonna love the Domane. I have about 5000 miles on a 5.2. As an retired Cat. 2 roadie, I love this thing.
There are hills in Texas?

I drank 2 bottles of water today, but no food.
There are hills and moutains but not within 100 miles of here
But there are overpasses and I rode down to sea level.
It was the headwind that whipped my butt.

I'm 5'5" 202lbs. as of today (down from 225.5 in July), returned to cycling a year ago (bored with the ellipticals, etc.at my gym).

Feeling much better today, had breakfast and good water,and a solid 8 hours of sleep.
Rode 6.5 miles and could have gone farther but the rear derailer started getting squirly, jumping over gears and dropping back down etc..
Butt felt much better, I need to clean/lube my rear mech and run it through the gears.
I will be ready for the Domane, and farther rides will not be a problem.

31 - 5'9 225 here. Definitely need to lose some weight. I lift weights a couple times a week. Was running 2-3 times a week. Now that I have a good road bike I plan to integrate that into my training more. Joined a bike club here in Carrollton, TX that I look forward to participating in on the weekend. Kinda scared that I won't be able to keep up though. Biking is great for my core. I lift weights to maintain / build muscle mass. Hope to have visible ab muscles by Spring 2015. In my teens I would bike all the time and also was about 35 pounds lighter. That isn't a realistic weight considering my muscle mass but 210 and under would be awesome.

61, 6'2", was 308 lbs. last week when my wife and I started Jenny Craig. Now I'm already 10 lbs. lighter after only 5 days! I know it mostly water but it is a big relief to be under 300 again even though it is only a number. We bought our bikes last April and started out pretty slow/infrequent. I rode twenty miles Saturday after work for the first time in many years. It took me two hours and twenty minutes. Truthfully I got a little carried away. i had intially planed to only ride for one hour. Previously my longest recent ride was 50 minutes not including our vacation trip on the Hiawatha trail which was almost all downhill.
Thanks to all of the people who haveposted their success stories. They are very inspirational and encouraging. In about a year I will be able to add my own.

Hey yall, I been kicking around this forum a few years now,,,I am here to confess to yall that my wife got me a new recliner. no, not a recumbent, a Lazy Boy.....
3 years ago I played Superman and pulled my buddies tent, sleeping bag and food and water, along with mine over this granny gear climb from hell, nuff said.
Then I some how fell into this recliner and I put under 250 miles on my Surly in 2 years.
I am still under 60, well over 200, 6'3",,, Can I get a AMEN to me climbing back into the saddle,,, can I do it, can I come back, or even close, is it too late, am I too fat?

In about 8 to 10 years I would like to hook up Bob, with all my gear, sell EVERYTHING else, and go North West or South West, or Alabama, Kentucky, Seattle,,,Baja,,,,somewhere in that area...

On the third week of a Plant Turn Around and got moved from nights to days straight away (so my mid day ride plan promptly died) BUT.
Finally got a day off and picked up my Trek Domane from the Bike Barn in clear lake.
I have been averaging 12000-13000 steps a day plus all the valve turning and plumbing associated with completely deconning a chemical plant to allow internal work, and staying away from poor foods I have dropped down to 258.
Its getting better and resting enough that strength is building back, if the storm dies down I will put some miles on the Domane today.

Greetings, new to the forums here. 6'0", ~205, 33 yrs. Goal is only to spend more time riding, if I lose weight that's great. Used to enjoy running but had a sarcoma removed from my leg last year and took a bunch of muscle with it so running hurts now. I enjoyed riding immensely when I was a kid and got back into it this spring.

For clarity, don't take "used to enjoy running" as "I used to run". Generally, I've avoided exercise my adult life. Biking manages to accomplish the exercise without feeling like I'm "working out". Just enjoy the time spent outdoors. Stuck at the moment on a mid-eighties Raleigh road bike that is a touch too big, looking to get a mtb soon.

Well time to get back on the bike for another go. 5'11" 275. just turned 56. I ride a Trek 7.3 . Summers in Florida with the excessive humidity just kill it for me. Last year I got 10 off then got a pinched nerve in my neck. Ended up with a steroid injection in my neck to kill the pain. put the 10 back on. Off to the Pinellas trail this weekend.

I just want to give a status update on the bicycling exercise program that I started when I joined this forum and posted in this thread back in September of 2007. I weighed 267 pounds at the time. I bought a 2007 Trek 7.7 FX and rode it for a few months. I lost a few pounds over the first several months, but I wasn't keeping my diet in check, so I wasn't making as much progress as I hoped for. I guess I was hoping for something magical to happen, merely because I was riding a bicycle a few times a week, and it just didn't. So eventually I got tired of the regimen, found excuses to avoid riding and dieting, and went along for several more years with my weight hovering at about 270 pounds, all the while letting the Trek gather dust in the garage.

Then in September of 2012, I once again grew tired of being overweight and out of shape, so I dusted off my bike and started riding again. But this time, I combined it with a calorie-counting diet with realistic nutritional and caloric targets that I thought I could stick too, not too extreme, but enough that I knew I was dieting. At first I could only ride 2 or 3 days out of the week, as I was simply too exhausted by my very short 2.5 mile treks to do more. Yes, I was that much out of shape! But gradually I managed to increase my riding frequency to 5 days out of the week and my rides slowly increased to 10 miles, then to 12. I know that won't sound like a lot to many of you, but it felt like victory to me. And lo and behold, the weight started coming off.

I have to admit that I'm a fair-weather rider, so my exercise program always has and probably always will take a hit when the weather is wet, too cold, or too hot. But aside from wimping out when the weather was intolerable, I have kept up the dieting and exercise since I resumed my program in 2012.

About a year ago, I hit 200 pounds, down from 270 when I started. A month later and I was consistently weighing 198, then 195. I've maintained that weight, ranging from 195 to 198, ever since. Since I haven't seen 200 on the scale now in just over a year, I'm ready to assert that I'm officially no longer a Clydesdale. And that feels good.

I still count calories. I have to. If I don't, I will gain weight again. And I still cycle about 12 miles, 5 days a week. But now, occasionally, I'll take a longer trip on the weekend, maybe 25 to 30 miles, just for fun rather than for exercise. That is something I couldn't have managed and couldn't have imagined when I dusted off my Trek two years ago. I find cycling to be much more pleasurable now that I've lost the excess weight I was carrying. In fact, I'm enjoying it so much, I'm thinking of replacing my Trek 7.7 FX with a new bike soon, maybe a road bike this time instead of a hybrid. I figure I've earned it.

I would like to say to everyone on this thread who started cycling for exercise with the intent of losing weight, don't give up. If you combine cycling with a sensible diet, you can reach any reasonable weight goal, as I've proven to myself. But do yourself a favor, and don't take a five year hiatus from your exercise program like I did. If you just stick with it, before you know it, you'll be a changed person for good, and glad of it.
