Hey there all, been a long time lurker here for a while. 6'4" and 258# as of this morning. I should be shedding some weight here now that I have replaced my daily commuter that my ex-wife just absolutely had to have. So its good to be back in the saddle, well sort of. I have to shed about 10 more #'s to get past the fear of breaking spokes for the wheels I just bought...LOL.

I will post some pictures a little later.

Here's what I posted in the Intro Forum.. Long story short? I'm 6' and 355 LBS in my birthday suit. I just bought a new road bike, I want to ride the heck out of it, and lose a bunch of weight doing it. Here's a pic of me and one of my bike.

I posted this in the Introductions forum but I might as well say Hi here too!

Hi everyone from Sonoma County CA, Santa Rosa to be exact. New rider here who got on a bike for the first time in something like 38 years 16 days ago. I started a weight loss program (nothing big, eat right, get more exercise) early in September 2013 and wanted to add something on. I was walking 2-3 miles a day (4.2 mph or so when I get going) and even threw in some light jogging.

My wife said let's get bikes so off to our LBS (see I do read things here) to test a few things out. We both came away with a Specialized Expedition Sport, hers the low entry model and mine the regular model. I really like it so far, more than I thought and have put in over 150 miles so far. I've learned here that I am to be called a Clydesdale being 5'11 and 238lbs. I was 250 back in August so things are going right. I really like it so far, more than I thought and have put in over 150 miles so far according to Map My Ride. Going to take some time to lose the weight and gain some lung capacity as I've led a sedentary lifestyle and quit smoking about 16 months ago. Even little hills kill me!

So nice to meet everyone, I've got alot to learn.

I've been participating on other parts of the Forum and just saw today that there is a category for me! So, a confession. I'm 5'10" and 220 lbs. More heifer than clydesdale. I'm getting back into cycling after a very long absence. In part for the exercise, which I need badly. Also in part to ride with my wife and adult son who has taken to road riding for the first time.

My last road bike is a 1974 Raleigh Competition which I intend to try to ride again. I hope it can bear the weight as I am a good bit heavier than when I bought it new back in the day. It is pretty much mint condition, but I am having it overhauled anyway.

For now (winter), I am lifting weights and doing spinning classes. Frankly, spinning is kicking my butt. I'm not planning any outdoor cycling until the weather warms in March.

So hello to all here. I'll be checking in pretty much every day.

6' 2", 280 (down from 295). I am just getting into cycling. I collect antique and vintage bikes but they were either made and sized for children, or in the case of the turn-of-the-century ones, were made of wood (now over 100 years old and dried out) and for adults who weighed 150 pounds less than I do.

I bought this 2013 Cannondale Quick after trying out a modern bike and being amazed at how easy they are to ride. My wife, slim little thing, has been riding for awhile on a Target-bought Schwinn. We got her a new Cannondale when I got mine. My goal is to get down to about 210 or a little less. I'm either going to reward myself for losing the weight with a new road bike, or I might go ahead and get one and use it to help lose the weight.

I barely qualify, but I am still above 200. 6'1/202 lbs. Ride a Raleigh Furley/Roper 57cm as my commuter.

    Greetings All,

Newish Clydesdale to the forum. Started riding a hybrid in 2009 mostly off-road, weighing in at 222 and 6ft. Got kinda tired of that bike after about a year when I noticed I was peddling like crazy and getting passed by every roadie on the ride home. Moved over to road cycling a couple months ago when the Mrs gave me this beauty for my birthday.

It's been nothing but fun ever since.

Down to 204 these days thanks to a gluten-free diet (okay, mostly gluten-free, I cheat with a pizza every weekend!) and road cycling.

I ride a vintage kuwahara 10 speed. It is about 35 years old. I am a lot older than it is. I'm 6ft 7in and in the upper half of the 200 lb range.

The bikes not much but there are not many 69 cm frames on the market today without mortgaging the house.

6'1" and 230. Just started bicycling again a few weeks ago on my vintage Trek hybrid. Decided to get a new Trek DS and loving it. Target goal of 199 in the next 90 days.

Another question from a noob clyde: do most road bikes have drop handlebars? And I assume that drops require you to ride in a more forward position, so do you clydes with drops have any back or other issues?

Amish, you might want to look at a hybrid, cyclocross or even a hard-tail mountain bike. They all have a much more upright riding style and your back will thank you. If you have money to burn, there are some truly awesome upright road bikes from all the major manufacturers.

Myself (back when I was a Clydesdale), I started riding a non-suspension mountain bike until I put so many miles on it that I wore it out, and it was not worth fixing. Since then I upgraded to a cyclocross which allows me near roadbike speed with the ability to tackle single track trails. Cyclocross bikes are built like tanks, although not as heavy as you would suspect. You can pick up a good one for $1,000 - $1,500. I have probably logged just over 10,000 miles on my ride (Cannondale CAADX) with semi-annual tuneups, and it still handles like new.

I'm a clyde racer who'd like to not be in that category anymore. I currently weigh 250# and am in the process of dropping as much as possible. Also I'm addicted to bikes, I currently have 21 bikes/frames though I'd like to thin it out a little bit.

Here are some of my bikes in no particular order

    93 gt zaskar le

    12 jamis nemesis

    soma double cross

    land shark pro carbon

94 specialized allez I repainted to look like a 7-11 bike

ross cruiser I repainted and added a car horn to

05 jamis satellite in touring mode

    98? gt zr2000

96 team fat chance yo eddy

late 90's land shark ss dirt shark

I have a few others but that is clearly enough pictures for one day.

I'm 5'10", 215. I just started racing in cat5 ... and for some reason, even though it shouldn't be the case, I'm a decent climber. I can probably get down to 185, but no way I could be less than that. At 200 I'll probably be around 10% body fat.

Here are some before and after pics: In the after pic, I'm in the red jacket, on the left. That was before a race this past Sunday.

The last pic is my bike, a 2010 LaPierre Sensium 400.

I love those old GT frames with the triple triangle design. I almost picked up a GT Palomar but the guy wanted too much (IMO) for the condition it was in. I am wanting to get one and turn it into a skinny tire cross-style drop bar bike. I think a set of drop bars, cross tires, and that frame style would be so neat to roll around on- and off-road.

    Very nice collection of bikes!

Side note: what stands are you using? I am looking to get one here this spring.
Looking forward to my winter commuting adventure.....

Thanks the stands are wrench force (tall with black base), park tools prs-3 (****ty condition but price was right), and a blackburn workhorse I'm planning on replacing with either a feedback sports sprint, topeak prep stand race, or a park tools prs-21.

As for a gt depending on how tall you are I have a frameset that would be perfect for what you want to do.

Awesome job on the weight loss.
I'm currently 250ish (6'2") and have a goal to drop up to 50lbs this year. I'll normally fluctuate 20+ pounds per year, especially in the summer and early fall when I'm riding constantly, but I'm tired of the annual weight gain and over bloated feeling through the winter months.
    I'm not a bear...
So, calorie counting is my first disciplined step to dropping the lbs. I'm also getting an earlier jump on the riding season this year and plan to compete in a few mtb races in order to kick my own rear end.

I'll remember to report back to this thread with my progress.

I just bought a Torker Trike to cruise around the neighborhood. I'm gonna need another bike to take on public transit.

Hey everyone! So I just found out I'm some kind of Athena. I'm 5'10" and 230 lbs. I started out at 315 two years ago. So far, I've been losing weight on diet alone, but since I recently quit smoking a couple weeks ago, I'd really like to start biking now.

I have absolutely no idea how to care for a bike, but I'm excited to figure it out! I've been looking around at what kind of bikes are available, but I'm not sure what I need for the trails in my area, or what's available to me at 230 lbs. I will definitely go to a bike shop.

    Nice to meet you all!

Not new, but not particularly active. 5'10 and 270 pounds. My Clyde commuter is a frame up built Surly Straggler. my current wtb wheelset turned into noodles, so I've got an Alfine/dyad out back and a DT swiss 350/Chukker coming for the front wheel.

Also going to be getting hydraulic brakes soon. as I refuse to tolerate Avid squeal, dislike the maintenance of mechanicals and am just so very not satisfied with the power of my Shimano CX-77s.

    Hello -

I've been on here awhile, but not "formally" intro-ed myself or my bike. I'm a 48yr old male and 5' 11". As of last week was at 267lbs. Most people would never guess I weigh that much b/c I'm fairly solidly built from years of weight training/martial arts/etc. Since grad school in my early 30's I've just lazed and gained 55-60lbs (a "normal" wgt for me when training and @ 7-12% body fat was 205-215lbs).

However, last week Mrs. PolarBear007 and I started a paleo/LCHF diet. As a result, todays 1st week weigh-in has me 12lbs less at 255lbs. I don't have a specific weight goal in mind, but since my muscularity is much less than before (from a size 50 jacket to 46, etc.,), I think 220-215lbs is not out of the question - maybe even less.

I'm much more interested in touring/commuting types of bicycling so I'm in the process of slowly rebuilding a 1990 23" Schwinn High Plains hard-tail mtb. Here are some recent pics:

    Chain-ring side from behind:

    Chain-ring side full profile:

    From above/"cock-pit":

It's an exciting time for me and I'm looking forward to having some great adventures!

I'm planning on de-branding my 23" Schwinn High Plains updating components and powder-coating the frame - metamorphosizing it into the ULTIMATE TOURING MACHINE!!!
