    any clydes gonna be at Virginia beach for the Thomas Coghill ride on May 13th. If so let me know would like to meet some of my heavy friends. Hit the scale this morning 255 scales seem to have stopped moving down. But warmer weather is on the way.
    I've got a bike, you can ride it if you like. It's got a basket, a bell that rings and things to make it look good. I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it.

    I am on American Classic 420 wheels and things are fine. My weight is 238lbs, and I just read on the AC web site that the max weight is 210lbs. After 250 miles things are fine, should I have any concerns?

    One other option is to switch to bladed spokes and that will increase the weight limit to 225lbs. Or get my weight down

    Im 6 0 and for the last 2 years have been riding a Specialized Hardrock mountain bike. I just recently switched to a Scattante R550 and am currently in the 225 235 range. Three years ago I was well over 300 pounds, and have been steadily whittling away at the weight. I had well over a thousand miles on the Specialized and hope to quickly do the same to the road bike.

    I would like to do the Amtrak century this year in September and that is why I switched to the road bike. If Im lucky I will leave the Clydesdale category by the time September rolls around.

    I started riding the bike because I was getting dangerously bored at the gym. With the bike, you have no choice but to get back home. My longest ride so far is only 30 miles so I have a ways to go to get up to 100.

    I am similar to you. I started road cycling on January 29 weighing in at 5'10 229 lbs. After 2 months of hard cycling, I am down to 210 lbs.

    I live in Houston and due to the lack of hills, have to do most of my hard cycling on long flat rides.

    I have similar goals:

    195 by April 22 (this is the MS 150 ride from Houston to Austin)
    180 by August 15th (just prior to the Hotter 'n Hell 100 in Wichita Falls, TX)

    Weight just drops off when you cycle. What an awesome sport!

    I'll track weight with you. Name the weigh-in day and time!

    Great progress..Thanks for the inspiration.

    I have been tracking my wt weekly on the nutrution tread (wt loss club). Here is my progress to date:

    3/1/06 250
    3/8/06 247
    3/15/06 244
    3/22/06 243
    3/29/06 241

    I have plenty of hills here so I can get my heart rate up pretty quick. Rides have been 10-15 miles. I only wish the weather was slightly better, but it is just around the corner, as well as more daylight! As you have, I need to set some mileage/ride goals.

    I weigh in every Wednesday, but whatever works for you.

    A Wednesday weigh-in it is! I will post my progress at night.

    I did 62 miles today in a local charity ride and am doing another charity ride tomorrow where I will go 75 miles. Again, mostly flat roads, although today had about 2,000 ft of elevation changes.

    5'9" wt 220# I have a collection of road and MTB bikes and my old track bike a 1964 Bianchi Pista. My main ride is a Dean el Diente CTi road bike Record (pic). I have an Ionic Columbus FOCO steel Chorus, 2 Steel lugged Greg Lemond Italian built frames (SLX and TSX) C-record and Daytona, and a 1969 Cinelli Super Coursa Campy Nuovo Record, and my track bike a campy Pista group on the Bianchi.
    The one thing I noticed by the bikes on the first page were the bikes with the standard wheel sets. Only one Kryserium (which is pretty strong) other wise a wholly intelligent group.

    I am a true "Clydesdale" (over 200 lbs.); "Athenas" (I am female) are way too skinny!

    Anyway, I have had little trouble with components or frames, and I have used low-spoke count wheels and some race-level components, if they were part of the "spec". Some of you who do, and experience trouble, may find it's your riding style to blame. Not the hardware. Ride "heavy" or push the bike around a lot? That=trouble. The idea is to not overstress any component--or yourself. That means staying in the saddle, not standing on the pedals (use the gearing ratios to help you out), and don't "throw" the bike around--ride "quietly" with little swaying. That will also help you--and the bike--stay in one piece on rough roads (avoid the potholes).

    Also keep in mind that, no matter what the bike companies' promotional stuff says, don't put carriers (racks) and cargo loads on bikes not designed to do the job! Keep the trailer hitches away, too: Lightweight components and low-spoke-count wheels are NOT meant to carry a bigger load than you and a seat bag or lights/water bottles. They are not designed to take the stresses of pulling anything, either. You need a load carrier? Get a bike designed for that and/or is substantial enough to be adapted and is able to take the stress. Although these last suggestions apply to any rider, the "Clydesdale"-class cyclist needs to keep in mind they are a substantial load as-is, without extra load added, and must take that into consideration.

    Yikes. How depressing that I fit into such a category! Well, I guess there is some truth in advertisement as much of my weight gain as come at the expense of hauling large quantities of beer around.

    After lurking for a few days, I've finally decided to introduce myself: Hi, my name is oz25 and I'm a Clydesdale: 249 lbs./28.9 %bf. After reading through this entire thread (among others) and reading Heft on Wheels, I've become inspired to make a change.

    I have one question. I basically mountain bike (2-3 times a week). Is road biking going to be a more efficient way to put in the miles/time and thus eat up the pounds? I'm trying to decide if purchasing a road bike would be a smart investment or to just stick with the mountain bike on the road.

    oz25 - ride what you like. I tried the MB thing but only made it to the mountain a few times. If you have a passion for the road, or its more convient get a road bike. The speed can get addicting.

    I have put more miles on my road bike in the past month of ownership, then I did in the last six months on my hardtail.

    Plus riding in the wind is less intimidating on a road bike.

    So what would we call a over 300 in horse terms...

    I started out around 320. I'm down to ~300.5-302.5 depending on when I weigh myself (morning or afternoon). I seriously need to work harder to break that 300 mark. My goal is 250 by the end of this calender year. Used to be much easier. I did the low carb thing a few years back when I was in the 200 range. Got to down to 260 again from 286 before falling off the wagon and took 3 months to gain it all back and then some. Which pushed me into the 320 range. I have been eatting a balanced diet as recommended for me and my training needs. But it takes a whole lot longer to loose weight, roughly 2lbs every few weeks. Just wish I was back at my pre-college day weight. 218/15% bf.

    I ate the right things this week...Rained last 3 days and 4 of 7 days which made getting rides in tough though.

    Mike,

    I rode 62 on Saturday and 77 on Sunday in two charity rides. Worked out on the stationary on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Weighing in at 209.

    Taking a couple days off to rest for my first century on Sunday: The Scace Race in Clearlake, TX. I'm riding the 105...

    Wish me luck. I think I have the legs. I'm worried about my wind and my butt!

    Im 5-11 and 215 pounds. I was 270 at one time. Riding a Cannondale R800 (2003).

    Goals: do 1000 miles this year. Ride a Century, and be riding when Im 80 years old!

    Fat Newby seeks advice

    At 45 I was 225. 6' 6"
    I had a major Ducati wreck and broke 30 bones.
    Now I am at about 240.
    I'm as healed as I'm going to get, so I need to get out on a bike.

    I am looking for a road bike that would fit me.
    37" inseam
    37" sleeve length

    62, 63, 64cm frame?

    I'm looking in the $1000 - $1500 price range.

    I like the Trek pro 2.1 I saw, but I have no expertise.

    581 pounds-13 months later, 249 pounds!

    I was a definate superclyde 13 months ago at 581 pounds. 13 months ago, I had bariatric surgery and took up cycling as a low impact exercise. 300+ pounds lighter now and currently training for the Lotoja in 2007! I currently ride an old Royce Union mountainbike set up and converted for touring. Sorry 'bout the grainy pic, it's from a cameraphone when I was out on a 106 mile tour March 11. This is the bike I want!

    I am 240 pounds, but I started riding last year I was 275 pounds.
    I have been riding a Trek 1000 (I bought it 2 years ago for $550) because it was cheap (I was not sure how seriuos I was going to be initially).

    I feel my my own personel view is that big guys need aluminum since it is highly resistant to flex. I would recommend a Cannondale R500 or R800, just make sure you get strong wheels. My Trek 1000 is good, but in my opinion the Treks are over valued.

    But it is really important for you to go to several bike shops and have them size you up with your dimensions and then test ride several bikes so you will get a better idea of what you can expect the bike will feel like for you. What will work for me may not work for you. I prefer the stiffness of aluminum so I can go fast, Carbon is very comfortable, but with my weight, it would flex a lot.

    Great thread! I'm at 6'2", 240, and looking at various bikes - Lemond Big Sky SL (57cm), Giant OCR1 (XL) - both great bargains... and several others. My main concern is getting the fit right - i.e. is the Lemond too small or the Giant too large? , and the wheels/tire size. Both have fewer rather than more spokes, which the shops tell me are stronger - that defies logic - but as long as they stand behind it, should I be concerned enough to either swap the wheels or look at different bikes? And should I change the tires to the widest that will fit, or stick with the stock 28c or 25c size? All opinions welcome, and I'll be hanging around this thread for a while - I can't remember being below 200 lbs.

    I'm 6'1' and 220. I would have thought you would need at least a 58" or possibly a 59" frame. Take alook at http://www.competitivecyclist.com/za...LCULATOR_INTRO to calculate your fit/frame size.
    I ride a 58" and 700X23c Bontrager wheels on a Trek 2300 with no problems.

    I'm 6' 1.5" and 215 lbs looking to go to 190 - 195 lbs. I was about 240 lbs in Sep when I decided to commute 2 - 3 days year round. I ride the Performance store brand - Terrazo 2.0 road bike. It has an aluminum frame and carbon seat post / forks. I believe it has 24 spokes in front and 28 in the rear. It seems to be holding up to my weight. I'm running 700x23c tires at about 125psi (they can go to 160psi).
