    First time poster here, and I'm proud to do it in a Clydesdale thread I am 6'2" and am currently at 246 pounds. I was 286 at New year's when I decided it was time for a change. I commute to work every day for a total of 16 miles a day, and sometimes I commute to my other job for a total of 42 miles both ways.

    I ride an '07 Specialized Allez Elite, and I love it. I've torn it up a few times, but my local bike shop is great and they take good care of me. I've also got a Hardrock sport mountain bike, and that thing has seen major punishment.

    I share your loathing for skinny punks who never break a sweat when I'm hyperventilating, but I would love to someday lead the pack across town. It's just really nice to find a thread for guys like me.....big dudes need saddle time too!!!!!

    Not my first post here - but the other two were tonight as well! I'm 39, 6' and was about 245 at my physical at the beginning of the year. Time for a change... Quit smoking like a, well - a bad habit, and have lost a bit by eating right and walking a lot. I used to ride a lot through high school but other than about twice a couple of years ago to see if I could still do it, I didn't get on a bike until this year. And it's the same 1985 (I think) Ross Utopian I bought new. It got the once-over from the LBS and will be a good starter for me. Had a nice ride tonight, and looking forward to many more. Thanks to all for everything I've already learned here so far!

    hey there, figured id toss my hat in the ring here too

    started riding bikes again a couple years ago, sorta for fun with the intentions of exercise. im 6' and the bathroom scale said 260# last time i checked. ive aquired a stable full of bicycles in the past two years, all schwinn cruisers and musclebikes though. most my rides are for fun and honestly i take it pretty slow, but i have managed to ditch smoking and can ride all day without getting tired/out of breath now, but like i said, i go slow all day. now that ive got a full blown bicycle illness, im wanting to get something for disciplined exercise more than liesurely rides. in the past ive always been comfortable around 200-210, so my goal is to get back down there. lookin for a bike to whip me into shape as we speak. probly just gonna end up being on old steel tube schwinn lightweight turned single speed. any suggestions for park laps welcome ?

    Ex-athlete, new biker...looking for bike

    Hello, I'm a Clydesdale, for sure. I'm 6' 2" and weigh in at 320 lbs. Was an all-state high school athlete at 225 lbs, but over a dacade has passed since then. I have let my activity level essentially vanish, and my health, and life are at stake if I cannot make some changes. I don't drink, don't smoke, just eat too much, too often, and don't excercise much anymore. Looking to cycling for a stress outlet and way to increase my activity level A LOT. I am looking to lose 100 pounds WITHOUT bariatric surgery, so I will be keeping a daily journal of my experiences on this 100 pound journey. I want to live my life and enjoy my beautiful family. I want to be able to practice my profession uninhibited by my weight. I want to feel alive again. I think that feeling better about myself and my condition will help me more easily maintain a positive outlook on life and enjoy it more in general. My weight is quite excessive, but I am still able to excercise pretty well, just don't want to kill my joints on a treadmil....and honestly, I don't like running for running's sake anyway! When I conquer my 100 pound mountain, I just might write a book about it....who knows. I hope that by using this forum, I can gain some support and keep motivated.

    So, first, I need a bike. I am not your average clydesdale. Most of you on here seem to be well below the 300 pound line, so I'm thinking sturdy is of the utmost importance for me. I am willing to spend a little to get something that I will stick with for a while. I am thinking mountain bike frame to start with, and if I fall in love w/ cycling and drop say....50 lbs, I will convert to a nice sturdy road bike.

    First of all, welcome to the forum. I've been lurking here for about a year, and have learned a lot from these folks.

    At our weight (I was 317 this morning), we aren't anywhere close to needing a specially-built bike that costs $1750. A lot of the folks here, myself included, ride the Specialized Hard Rock. I've had mine since 1990, and until a few weeks ago it still had most of its original components.

    Check out your local bike shop, or, if money's an issue, look for a used one on Craigslist. The important thing is to get a bike (and a helmet!) and start riding. Take it as slowly as you need to at first, but if you stick with it you'll be surprised at how quickly the miles add up and the pounds melt off.

    You can do this, and have a heck of a lot of fun along the way!

    Yeah, what he said . The hardest part is just getting out there. Once you do that, it's all downhill.....and then uphill, and then down another hill...and then, well you get the point.

    Does anyone have any input as to Kona Hoss vs. Specialized Hard Rock for a 320 lbs man? Thanks.

    Both are good bikes. Specialized HR is kind of the "House Bike", though, since it has stood bdingers punishment pretty well.

    I'm 5'9" x 240 right now. I got back into cycling recently by talking to a couple of friends that ride regularly. I've lost 38 pounds so far in a year and a half in the gym, but I used to ride many years ago (I'm 51 now), and have the fever again. OK, so $4.00 a gallon gas may be a motivator too! I'm currently riding about 10 miles a day to get in better shape to start commuting 7 miles to work. Hey, why not have fun while trying to get healthy?

    Interesting post... I got out of the Army at 175 back in 1998... thank god for home cooking and beer...LOL I was up to 240 for a little while...back down to 220 now... just re-starting out on my biking... usually snowmobiling in the winter keeps me fit...

    Welcome to the forum. I started rding in January with the goal of losing 104 pounds this year. I started at 6'1" and 329 pounds. I have lost 54 pounds so far, and I am right on track to make my goal. When I started, I rode my olf Huffy mountain bike because that it is what I had. I rode it hard for 5 months and although I broke some things, nothing was weight related. A month ago, I picked up an almost new road bike (at 285 pounds) and have put almost 250 miles on it in the last month.

    Keep it up, and you can lose the weight!

    I just joined the site today. I'm 5'10" with cleats on and weighed in at 263lbs last week at my doctor's office. Needless to say, the doc told me to drop a few pounds so, today I took my bike out of storage for the first time in 7 years. It's a '96 Bontrager Privateer that I used to ride real hard in the late '90's and into 2000 before my daughter was born. Even then, I was still 215-220lbs. So, I hope to spend the next couple of days cleaning up the bike so I can go for a ride this weekend and start to make it a regular thing again.

    Ok, so I'm really excited. I decided on the Specialized Hardrock 2008. I ordered the Pro Disk version and I should be getting it tomorrow (from the Bike Shop). I want to ride it home from the bike shop as a way of starting a good habit. For my first ride, I'm thinking I should stay on the sidewalk (don't laugh, I'm serious), instead of getting in w/ the cars. What do you think? It is a 35 mph road (about 5 mile ride), w/ no bike lane....and I'm not familiar w/ bike rules for the city yet. I'm really excited!

    Welcome guys!!

    Sidewalk - most cities it's illegal and you can get a ticket. If you want to get your sea legs maybe find a big mall parking lot until you feel more comfortable but sidewalks are really more dangerous. Pedestrians don't expect you (get frightened, complain, city councils create more bills against riding), cars don't expect to see you (especially if they're only looking at one traffic direction - and even if you are in their line of vision they are looking at traffic, not on the sidewalk), and they're not in that great shape.

    The quicker you can get on the road and feel comfortable the better - we look forward to your first ride report

    Congrats on the Hardrock. You're gonna love it.

    My first ride home was up a huge hill -- I had to stop six times on the way up, and was good for nothing other than a long nap afterwards. Except that I couldn't really sleep -- kept being awakened by some weird wheezing noise, which I eventually recognized as my own breathing.

    A month later I was climbing the hill without stopping. 4 mph, yes, but no stops.

    +1 on the idea of trying out the bike in a parking lot. (Personally I like university parking lots, which are usually deserted on weekends.) You'll want to get used to the shifting, which takes a bit of practice, and the disc brakes, which are MUCH more positive than the standard brakes you might remember from years ago.

    Finally, be sure to pick up a helmet when you get the bike.

    Carbo loaded for over a decade to top out at 6'1" and 267#. Trained for a recent century and weighed in at 252. Clydesdale forever, I guess, but hoping to just barely qualify sometime.

    First post.

    Hello fellow Clyde's I am 6'3" and tip the scales at 230. Long story but started out at 290 with diabetes and depression. Four years later still a clyde but less so. My friend from High School (30+ years ago) and I just completed our third straight Ride the Rockie last week! So riding has saved my life and my hope to all of you is that it does the same for you.

    Hi everyone. I suppose I should use the first post to introduce myself. I never heard the term Clydesdale used in this particular way before, but I suppose it's fitting. I am 6'2 and weigh in at 365. Not the heaviest I have ever been, but since I am nearing 40, I need to lose the weight to make sure my 2 daughters have dad around to walk them down the aisle when it's time.

    I haven't purchased a bike yet, but it seems that this is the place to get the good reviews of what to get. My wife has already said that we can spend upto around 800 or so for a good bike that will hold me up and take the stress of me riding. So I will pose the question that I am sure every first time poster asks...

    What is a good bike to purchase? Also, should I look into purchasing certain tires/wheels or anything else?

    Blackwulf, take a peek at the Specialized line, in particular, the Hard Rock Sport. Another alternative might be the Kona Hoss. Third, the Surly Crosscheck or Long Haul trucker.

    Hello all. I am in Milwaukee and currently am around 210. When my wife was pregnant with our first child this winter, I too put on baby weight and got up to 237. Since April I have been watching what I eat and riding and have lost most of the weight (my wife also has lost the baby weight and is smaller than before she was pregnant). I try to ride about 150-200 miles a week depending on schedules and the baby. Just thought I would stop in and say hello.
