I just had to chime in on this one. I was at the doctor's office for a checkup this morning and have officially lost 27 pounds in the last 2 months. I am only 10 pounds away from being under 300 pounds for the first time in over 10 years. I have been dieting, but riding has made all the difference. My wife is so impressed that she asked me to go the the bike shop with her this weekend to start looking for a ride for her. I am really excited about that since she is not much of an outdoors person, and I would love having her along.
We are planning a trip to Arkansas sometime in October and I would like to carry the bikes with us.

just a bit of an update... sorta.... when i started running, swimming and riding again, it was with the goal of improving my health (and no small amount of age denial)... i wanted to lose some weight as well. but, knowing that working out increases muscle mass i knew that a good indicator of progress would be to watch my clothing sizes.... i have already dropped several shirt sizes....
last november, i was on my way to the store to buy some 40 inch waist pants.... today, my sons and i went shopping... on a whim, i decided to see just what size pants fit these days... i almost did the happy dance right there in the dressing room when i put on a pair of 34 inch waist pants!!!!!!
the word "YEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAWWWWWWWW" comes to mind....
just wanted to share that.... a question comes to mind... i know i am new here... but, i kinda like this place... if i hit my goal of 180 pounds.... can i still hang out here?
New Clyde has a ride
This new Clyde now has a ride. :) It's a cheapie model mountain bike, but it was free :D. I spent $20 getting it running and have done about 10 miles total in 4 rides .. and I'm enjoying it! This is the first time I've rode a bike in over 30 years :eek: but you really do never forget. Once I know for sure that I'll keep this up then I'll spend some real money on a quality bike. But now I know at least I can ride.

Good job! It's great that your wife wants to join you, too. I just got back from a holiday in Eastern Washington where we took the bikes specifically because we wanted to do some mountain biking. A lot more fun that way :) .

This thread is soooo inspirational. I didn't realize I was a clydesdale, but I think I have found a new board to post on. I started riding in January pretty regularly, and have dropped from 239 to 210. I could not be any happier (even though I want to be under 200), but I am blown away by the stories here. I think I have the will to lose that other 10 pounds now.
I started riding my old Maruishi MT15 again (bought it in 1984 when I had a paper route) this past spring at about 350lbs, then after a couple of months I bought a new old stock 23" Specialized expedition sport on a clearance deal for $249 CAN because the old MT15 needed a lot of TLC. I've been riding to work (30km round trip) an average of 2 to 3 times a week (I work out of town quite often so I miss a week here and there). I rode the sport up until this week when I treated myself to a new 22" 2007 Kona Hoss that was on sale for $798 CAN. Took it out for my first real off road bike ride in years today and loved it. I don't have a before pic but this pic was today and I'm down from 350lbs to 317lbs at this point:
Nice collection of bikes, headdamage, and beautiful scenery! That would make it easy to get outside, but those hills look like they would leave a lasting memory.
My turn. Although not as impressive as most of you folks, I have managed to lose 50 lbs. 4 years ago, I weighed in at about 275lbs. Lost and forgotten 4 years ago through diet and general exercise, and for the last 3 years cycling. I lost it, and kept it lost. It's gone. From size XXL and 40 waist to size L and 36 waist.

That's 50 lbs??? Wow. You look great. I've lost almost 50 and noone can even tell the difference.
I don't have any good pictures, but I'm now floating around 225, after topping out at 265 in March. Seeing some rehearsal photos of myself in a play inspired me to get on the diet, then signing up for a charity ride inspired me to get on the bike. Since then I've picked up a Schwinn Voyageur gs for me, and a Townie each for me and the wife. I'll add a road bike soon, but am trying to hold off until spring before I buy yet another bike.
The key for me has been staying under 1500 calories a day and cardio. Before I even bought the Schwinn, I bought a recumbent exercise bike and started doing 30 minutes every morning.
Then I cut out the Mountain Dew, and after a week or so the headaches went away. So now it's mostly nothing but water, and exercise at least 6 days each week. It's simple, but nothing easy about it. My goal weight is 185, so I'm halfway there. It's exciting to but new pants now, and I can even wear shoes I haven't been able to wear in years because I've lost weight in my feet! It also helps to now only have 2 chins instead of 3!

I'm at a plateau of sorts but I went from size 48 pants to size 34-35.
I still have about 15-20 to go but am still plugging away. I'm really
much more toned than I was when I lost the first 60, took on a new
job, gained back 25 or so then lost it again. So far I've kept off the
mostly 60 pounds for two years now - all of my old clothes are long
gone now thankfully.
My wife, though, is the one with the impressive story. I'll try and get
permission for her before/after pics. She's lost 150 pounds. Now she
commutes to work 3x a week.
Oh - by the way, I have a weight loss tip for all of you who want to
keep it off:
Buy very expensive bike parts that have a weight limit. If you go over the
limit not only can't you ride but you might break the part of you do, so you
have a built in incentive to stay well below the weight limit!
My wife bought me some really nice jeans than I won't be able to wear if I gain weight. I look so sexy in them:p so I now have incentive to not gain any weight.:D:D

Any tips for when you reach a plateau? I did pretty well getting down aout 30 lbs, but I haven't been able to drop further. I like the idea of measuring clothes sizes rather than pounds -- I feel more fit and my wardrobe fits better -- but I'd like to disqualify myself from this board. No offense, of course.

Eight stone is equal to 112 pounds. That is a weight loss of approximately 6.5 lbs per week for 17 weeks. WOW! Please tell us your magic diet elixer so that we all can have such great success!
Thanks for the comments folks. I still amaze myself looking at the change. I think you're right troutbreath to look at clothes size rather than just weight you can burn the fat and put weight on. I know much of my weight loss will be lean tissue as well as fat as I went on a very low calorie diet I moved from having tight 44" trousers to being comfortable in a 32".
The diet I followed was called lighterlife here in the UK which is similar to the Cambridge diet which I think is more well known. It was basically food replacements that give 100% of the vitamins and minerals but not so much of the calories only 500 per day. Not the healthiest route to weight loss but one that worked for me. Keeping it off is now the real challenge.
