And yes the cigs have been gone for almost 4 years.
The intervening years have added some distinguishment to the beard, too.

Congrats on the loss so far, and on kicking the tobacco.

Looking back a lot has happened in those years.

Thats my Pop in the before pic, I lost him and my Mom in 2007. Then in April 2008 I lost my son to cancer. Sept 2008 I quit the smokes and exactly 1 year later I was diagnosed Type 2 Diabetes and WAR was declared!!!

I've lost 65lbs and my A1C was 5.7 the first of June. I've got a couple of rides coming up benefiting Cancer and Diabetes.

As Jimmy Buffet says, "Jimmy some of it's magic and some of it's tragic, but I've had a good life all the way."

Sorry to hear about your losses back in 2007 and 2008. Keep up the good work, though. Looks like you're getting close to fighting weight.

Thanks. I'm not real sure how much I want to lose. I've been a "big burly" guy all my life it seems. Other than a couple hurdles, I feel better all the time. I guess I'll just keep it going until I hit a wall and then I'll set myself a goal. That's just the weight loss, I have a goal of riding in my first century next year and going on my first over night tour in September on the Katy Trail here in my home state of Missouri.

Come on folks, lets fire up this thread.

Before : ~316 in March of this year

In the middle : ~273 taken this week

Goal is to be around 220 by the end of the year, so far I've made goal each month. With the Endomondo challenge I hope to do the same for the next 6 =)

I started riding my bicycle again 3 weeks ago. I started at 379LB. I'm 5'9''. I now weigh 345LB. I have a long way to go but I feel much better. One question I have for you guys. What kind of bike did you use when you were at your heavyest. I'm afraid I'm too heavy for my bike.

Great work Scott!....Do you care to share what "diet" you are using to lose 19lbs in a month and a half?

I have made a few changes in my diet

1.) No soda not even diet. I drink at least 8 cups of water a day plus, tea no sweetener, skim milk and healthy fruit and veggie juice.
2.) At first I tracked every calorie I ate and had a goal not to go over my daily allowance. Now, I don't track so much but, I have better porition control
3.) I eat five times a day. Breakfast, mid-morning, lunch, mid-afternoon and dinner.

I have been using the meal plan from www.weighandwin.com since the beginning of July. It's mostly for people in Colorado since all the weigh stations are here but, the meal plan has been very helpful.

Jim, Not sure how I missed this post but I occasionally work in Albany. As a matter of fact I was just there yesterday. I have yet to bring my bike because I've been training for a big mountain century this weekend and didn't want to risk riding on unfamiliar roads or terrain. I'll probably be going back sometime in September and when I do I'll let you know so we can get a ride in together.

Just started so no after pic. Just a current pic taken two days ago when i bought me and my wife our new bikes.

I'm 31, 5'9" and 242 Lbs. Doctor told me and my wife that if we didn't lose weight that we would be more at risk for a number of deceases. So we listen to him. I looked at a number of different things but cycling just seemed like the most fun and something that I would do. Thats the most important thing that we keep doing it. So here I am.

Not Pretty but I'm trying.

New member from Texas with a before picture.

Hello,

Before I start telling you about me, let me tell you about you. You guys/gals are amazing! I've read the whole before/after thread and you guys/gals rock!!!!! The obstacles you've overcome is super inspiring to say the least. When I read your stories and see the pictures I think....why not me? For someone whose never been in our shoes they really don't have a clue about all of the thoughts/problems that go with being overweight, or as in my case, morbidly obese.

I'm a new member and definitely qualify for this forum. At 5'10" and 340.5 lbs I think I'm in the middle upper range at least. As a kid I rode my bicycles everywhere. I always had more than one bike and plenty of spare parts waiting for the next build. I would drag parts home from people's trash and make my franken bikes. My Stingray was my favorite. Who here remembers wheelieing their Stingray all over the neighborhood? My bikes were my freedom machines. As an adult I bought a new 1983 Schwinn Super Le Tour and rode it for about a year and then life got in the way as I'm sure it did for most of you.

Since I got rid of that Schwinn I've owned a few of the lesser brands that were only used every now and then to make the trip around the block to appease my wife who has always been a jogger (which I used to be also). Which brings me to my current situation. The bike I currently own is a (don't laugh) NEXT 3 speed. It started out as a Mountain bike but I put a padded seat on it and high rise handle bars for comfort. The last time I rode it I was about 44 lbs lighter. I don't expect it to last long and I've already been looking at SPECIALIZED and TREK 29er's. I rode it today and those extra pounds are really evident. I only rode it for .7 miles and my legs felt like they were going to fall off. I rode it in 3rd gear the whole way. That surprised me because I didn't know I was that bad off. My goal is to ride every day as far as I feel I can make it. I'm going to go slow on the food/nutrition part since I need to experiment with my hypoglycemia (another nice side effect of being overweight). I was never hypoglycemic when I was smaller. Well, that's my story and I'm glad to be here.

Steve

Welcome Steve--from another newbie. I went about 1/4 mile the first day-it was gravel and uphill-and that was enough for me. Next time it was 1/2 mile. I'm up to 4 miles per trip now which is still pretty short compared to most of the folks on the forum but the point is that things do get better surprisingly quickly. Hang in there!

Well Here's my Story.. I'll be 40 the end of this year and have peaked @ 300 lbs. I haven't ridden a bike in almost 20 years and I decided it was time to buy a new bike In the 1 1/2 weeks I have had the bike I have ridden it 43 miles over 6 days. 3 days riding 8 miles and 3 days riding 6 miles. I feel much better now than I have in a long time. I'm on the right track to being back where I once was. Both routes I take have gradual inclines, and I am noticing a significant improvement already. Can't wait to see new pics in 3 ,6,and 9 mos. I'm trying to get my better half out riding but we just found out She's pregnant,so that's on hold for a while. She fully supports my renewed activity although the price tags on some things she doesn't like to hear about. I tell her it's just the initial investment and things will subside.. yeah right, who am I kidding Enough for now, Time to ride.

Still trying to figure out how to upload pics, 40 years old in May of this year and decided to stop making excuses. Going to the gym 5 days a week on my lunch break with some great guys who have been helping me out. Bought a new/ used bike in June ( Giant Yukon 2XL). After breaking multiple spokes, replacing rims and modifying to suit my geometry have gone from 5 mile rides to 25 on Saturday and 26 on Monday. Tring to gradually increase my mileage. I started out at 399 (the idea of breaking 400) freaked me out. Down to 375, but dont get on the scale often. Started in size 54 pants and currently 46's are becoming loose. Still a long haul ahead of me but I would like to get down to 250 and size 38 pants. Already looking for my next bike, thinking cyclocross, just have to figure out what brand will best stand up to my increased gravity!
