So- a while ago (almost 2 years ago actually) I wrote that I would post a before and after pic. I think I got around to posting the before pic, but for whatever reason the after pic didn't happen.
Almost 2 years on, I'm here to fulfil my promise of a before and after pic. In that time, through a combination of healthy eating and exercise (cycling, spinning and running) I've lost 7.5 stone. I now feel fitter and healthier that ever before and my enthusiasm for life knows no bounds!

Before - Nov 2010
After - May 2012
Loss = 7.5 stone

Wow! Brilliant! Well done!!
I found it's only once I'd lost some weight that I realised how much it had (literally!) weighed me down in the past.

Profile picture is from about 30 pounds go, the second is from about 75 pounds ago. I don't have any at my full weight, I destroyed them all. My parents or brothers might have one though. I will check.

Hello Again,
Been quite some time since I posted here. Thought I would make an update.
I'm 55-years-old now, and I seldom eat red meat these days. And in fact can go days without meat. I am fond of the six-inch veggie delight at Subway. (no cheese no mayo, just lots of mustard and every veggie they have) I drink only water at room temperature, some skim milk and fresh orange juice. Eat lots of apples and bananas. For breakfast I have an Earl Grey tea and two pieces of wheat toast (dark toasted) with real butter. Almost never eat anything fried and the only fast food is Subway EVER!. No soda, no caffeine (except the one cup of Earl Grey in the a.m.) We cook only with extra-virgin olive oil. Wife does a wicked-good vegetable oven roasted olive-oil-basted seasoned deal. I love that. Russet and sweet potatoes, with onions and mushrooms etc.
This month is the third anniversary of my get healthy lifestyle and I am still doing good. Actually getting used to this diet and when I occasionally overeat, it feels nasty, not good.
(1) I had set a goal this year of riding 1000 miles with the bicycle club and that was achieved with a total so far for 2012 of 1060 miles. (I like to think of it as me having ridden from Indy to Denver. This puts it in perspective)
(2) I did have some weight gain and it has been dogging me all year. I gained back about 15 pounds from my lowest point of 199 lbs in the fall of 2011 (86 pounds lost) This started with a two week business trip to Barcelona and Girona Spain and all those lunches and dinners, meals at business associate's homes etc.. Bunch of wine, bread and cheese. Came home up seven pounds! Managed to get through the winter with only a few more pounds added. But what was weird was the pounds used to fall off of me when I exercised. Then this summer riding bikes like a mad-man eating very right and have been the exact same weight now for nine months. My club buddies were saying that I was trading fat for muscle. And it is true I got a lot stronger this past summer, climbing hills much better, taking on the head-wind and riding in higher gears etc..
(3) My high-point was in September when on a calm-air Saturday I lead a 12 person baby-boomer pace-line for 17 miles at 22mph!
(5) But last month I developed an eye problem with blurred vision which turned out to be a large tumor of the pituitary gland that had been growing for years. Pressing on the optic nerves was the first manifestation that lead ultimately to brain surgery on the 7th of November 2012 (two weeks ago today, microsurgery done through the nasal and sinus. Wonders of modern medicine!) I will see my endocrinologist next week to see how my hormones are doing. So far, it looks like I am on the road to a 100% recovery.. So, it is feasible that the struggle with weight gain (inability to lose) could be related to this tumor making for a very low Testosterone among other things, Time will tell.
A couple of photos
This one is from the 12th of November, five days after my brain surgery. I can't ride or vigorous exercise for 30 days. Will be back on the bike first week of December depending upon the weather.
This one is December 7th 2009 on left, December 7th 2010 on right. The left image is the day I went into the hospital to repair my L4~L5 spinal disc hernia, the right is after 85 pounds in one year weight loss.
Photo from after I completed my first metric century (62 miles) in early June 2012. (Wanted to get a century 100 mile ride this summer but work conflicts prevented it)

What a great site this is, and I want to thank everyone here for all the help and inspiration that I have drawn from everyones success stories on here.
I knew I had gained a bunch of weight over the last couple of years, but I refused to see it in the mirror. But after I saw the photos from our Labor Day weekend trip to the lake I finally admitted I needed to do
something. I have never biked in my life, but at 52 years old I know my knees would not hold up to running, so I thought I would give biking a try. A friend gave me an old mountian bike to try out for awhile. Two weeks later I
was at the LBS buying a road bike. September 23rd I started riding 5 to 6 times a week. Sep 15th I weighed 222, today Nov 29th I'm at 198. I just met my first goal of breaking 200 and now the target weight is
180 before we hit the lake again in May.
So far I have dropped 24 pounds in 9 weeks by averaging around 150 miles a week and some barbell weights at home 3 times a week. I cut out sodas(1000 calories a day of soda), cut most of the sweets, and
about 20% smaller portions at meals. Eating 2000 to 2300 calories a day now. I was drinking a ton of calories with soda, milk and juices. I cut all that and only drink water and small amounts of milk now.
My wife likes it ALOT. She never complained about my weight, but she sure has let me know she likes the new body. I cant wait to post the next set of pics when I reach 180 pounds.

Just thought I would up date my before and after pics.
It has been 3 years now since I first posted, and I have just turned 55. I have been able to keep all the weight off and then some. Have perfected my diet and still ride quite a lot, but I have added a bit more weight lifting to try and firm up and stay healthy.
Weight now is 178.
Well, file size is too big to post, but here is a thumbnail photo.

First Leg Completed In a Longer Journey
Well, I just completed a utility ride to the store and bank. Logged my mileage and I have broken 1000 miles since I began in early May (2012). Not that big a deal to normal cyclist, but a huge deal for me. After all I am essentially a 60 year old “Uber Clyde” riding a 85 Raleigh Elkhorn (hard-tail MTB).
I do not want to disillusion any aspiring “Uber Clydes”, the first few weeks were difficult, I was starting out at well over 450 lbs. and had just finished a sedentary career position. I was so out of shape that my first ride was disappointing, it was all I could do to go 0.8 miles. It took a few weeks of daily short rides and several cycle adjustments/adaptions before I met my initial goal of 15 minutes of exercise.
Since then the goals were ramped up mostly based on time (with an average speed requirement). I am currently riding 40-42 minutes completing 7-8 miles on my longer days and a minimum of 30 minutes on my shorter days. I ride every day. Highlights include the loss of 60 lbs. as well as other health benefits.
My initial goal was to be less than 400 lbs. My initial goal was met in late October.
I have had some help along the way. I need to thank my wife for her support in my cycling endeavor. At a certain point she saw the fun and benefits of it and began cycling as well. We frequently ride together. I have a number of personal friends that have encouraged me as well. I would also like to extend my thanks to the Bike Forum and the “biggest losers” list that provided inspiration as well. There are some really incredible stories there.
The next leg of the journey includes the following goal:
• Weigh less than 350 lbs by early next May (the one year mark).
Thanks All – Spin On

Congratulations epiking on the milestone. You are looking good!
Wsm, I am impressed at the three years of keeping it off as it is tough to do for the long haul. Congratulations!

1000 miles is a lot of miles. It's 1000 miles more than most people ride. It's half a Tour de France.

As a person who has lost it and gained it all back a few times (sure there was a health issue in '08 and a debilitating injury in '10, both of which kept me off the bike) and had to lose it one more time, I think I could have avoided much of the regain if I'd known what I do now about how that happens.
The lifestyle changes it takes have to be permanent —*you make sure you don't let it go back to barbecue and beer madness when you hit that goal. If you've been at a high weight for a while the body will gladly comply with getting back to what it was used to.
Sure an indulgence on occasions for sanity's sake, but afterward — back on the horse, the healthy eating, the portion control, and the vigilance over the 'erm naughty stuff, that can quickly turn a winning streak into bloatfest fast.

450lbs and dropping, I hope
Here is picture of me before, the other close up's will not post, file to big. Trust , you are probally better off not seeing them, lol.
I am in Edgewater, Fl, with no bike yet, maybe a Trek7100, might hold me up, but not sure what a good used bike will cost. Any suggestions?
I workout at Edgewater Fitness, each day at 11am -1pm , but need somethign else to help me lose.

Hey all. New guy here, so I am just exploring the forum and discovering new threads.
Anyway, I have been skimming over this thread, and I have to say I am "WOWED" by everyone's transformations and successes. Congratulations to all of you.
Everybody looks amazing, and it's really inspiring me to get into cycling. Some of these transformations literally look like different people.
I have a question for those who are cycling for weight loss. Are you spending a lot of time cycling? Are you riding as fast/hard as you can go when you do?
I guess what I am wanting to know, is what kind of cycling "routine" would be best for fat loss.
I am currently in the process of losing weight myself (down to 305 as of 02/18/13 from 324 on 01/06/13) and am looking to get into cycling as an alternative to walking on the treadmill all the time. To be honest, the treadmill can get quite boring, and it makes me get lazy and skip a lot of days.

Everyone new believes there is "one" way, or a "best" way. There is not.
its actually pretty simple in concept. Go ride. Set a goal. Ride x distance, or x time. Don't worry about speed or intensity. Eat well. I repeat, eat well. Manage your calories. Don't fall into the trap of riding, getting hungry and eating more.
raise goal, rinse repeat.

Ditto what vesteroid wrote. Just ride, ride lots, ride for fun, ride for errands or commute or just ride. Did I mention ride lots. Pay attention to what, when, how and why you eat. Control your diet. Ride for the fun or riding and the weight should come off. Studies indicate that all out effort is not the best at burning fat. My thoughts are that if you are starting where I started that any amount of exercise is a vast improvement. Once you become fit and accustomed to riding a bike for long distances or periods of time then weightloss slows and it becomes a matter of diet and a net calorie loss to keep losing weight.
Where the riding also helps is because it is so fun you may soon want to eat better to increase your power or endurance thus adding to the fun. If it is fun you are more likely to keep doing it. So just ride, ride lots. Good luck.

This is going to be my first post in this thread, and hopefully not my last one!
There's roughly a year's difference between the two pics with daily short commutes to work and totally car free from day 1. I hope to post another picture in one years time from now being that much closer to my goal.
Thank you all for helping me and keeping me motivated all this time!
