Never even lurked this post, let alone considered posting here, but the after pic surprised me.
I still have 30-40 lb to go. I was 295 in the Before, 215 After. Currently bouncing around between 205-210.
You have to like them, their drummer is named Neil too(Peart), and he is an avid cyclist.

I'll call this before and during. Started at 270+ July of this year got down to 235 this weekend. I hope to lose another 35 pounds or so. I was wearing XXL shirts just so they would be long enough to cover my belly, I went and bought a couple of Large shirts this weekend that look alright on me. That felt pretty good. I'm looking forward to posting my final before and after, hopefully around July of next year.

The context is both pictures were taken at work when I was receiving awards (nothing big, really; one was an award for not getting laid off for 15 years; the other was for a certification I received.)
The before is from mid-2012 when I was near my heaviest, probably about 235. When I started MFP in August of 2013 I weighed about the same.
Before by doohickie@ymail.com, on Flickr
After is from this past week, at 199.

This wasn't about the weight loss, it was about all awards you get. Sheesh.
I kid. Congrats on all 3!!

Thanks for the posts in this thread! It's inspirational.
I don't have photos of myself, but I've come down from 100 kg (220 pounds) to 92.7 kg (204 lbs) in the past 33 days (-7.3 kg or -16 lbs). I'm a 185 cm (6 ft 1 in) tall guy in my late thirties. The high end of my normal weight is something like 85 kg (187 lbs), so there's some 8 kg and at least another 8 weeks or more to go. I've lost the weight by using a calorie counter app on my phone and sticking to 1200 - 1600 calories per day, depending on the amount of excercise. Counting calories sounds tedious, I know, but I've found it surprisingly easy. I'm a scientist by training with some background in nutrition and metabolism, so I guess the approach doesn't seem as off-putting to me as it might do to the next person. The app makes things quite easy and it does graphical plots of your progress.
Cycling hasn't been much of a factor in the weight loss so far, mostly because I'm in Finland and it's December, but it did inspire me to clean and fix my bike and start riding to commute and to run errands. We've had an unseasonably warm and rainy December in Southern Finland, so the problem is not ice and the cold, but darkness, rain and the sharp gravel that is spread on the streets to keep people from slipping. It's tough on the tires.
Up until about age 30, I was always the tall, naturally pretty skinny guy, with a major sweet tooth. I've been suffering from a degree of depression over the past few years and self-medicated with a large amounts of cakes, cookies and ice-cream. Now that I've lost some of the weight - fairly easily - and feel much better about my waistline, I kinda can't believe I let myself go for as long as I did. Of course, the trick is not so much losing the weight but keeping it off... Anyway, I've started to think about bike touring, something I've postponed and postponed when I couldn't get excited about much of anything.

Great job, thanks for motivating me. I am sitting about 235 right now and i am curious if i can reach 199. I am 6'1". i started riding pretty hard over the last few weeks and cut my calories to 2100 a day. If i workout more, i can earn a few more calories back. Good job.

2,100 calories a day is a nice place to start if you are exercising some every day or every other day.

Seeing your pictures, i think 199 is a good start. Thinking i can do better now. I signed up for a few major rides this year to motivate me. I am now commuting 20 miles a day to work and on the weekend riding 25-45 miles a day (With climbs). Today my Garmin showed i burned 1600 calories which i know is way too high. I ate about 500 of those calories. Your right though, people overestimate what they burn and over eat. The last year i rode very sporadic and over ate all the time. The biggest thing is staying on track and keeping those calories under 2100 for me. Consistency is the key.

Yes you can. It is a matter of changing your lifestyle. There is no point in dieting and exercising for a little and until you lose the weight so then you can go back to eating like you did! Then you'll go back to where you were. I took it to the extreme just because I wanted to race. 6.1 and 235 pounds is not bad at all but getting to 199 won't be that hard. One thing I learned that people need to watch more closely, don't feel entitled to more food just because you exercised, often times you are consuming what you burnt and more.

Luis, I would be interested in knowing a little more about your diet. You're working with a nutritionist, right? Have they provided you with a simply breakdown of protein, carb, fat percentages? Or, have they been more prescriptive than that? Are you using a diet tracker of any form and if so which one?
The nutritionist gave me a booklet of about 30-40 pages full of recipes, formulas, daily examples and explanations. I read some but it takes time adapting to it. She gave me a breakdown of I believe 50% carbs, 30% protein and 20% fat something like that. 2,100 to 2,300 cals a day that considering I workout 12-14hrs a week.
Take in mind the diet is meant for someone who is looking to have 5% body fat. I think I am right below 10% but for race day I'd like to be at around 7-8%.
I'll post a few more pics in a bit. I do get the "YOU LOOK SICK!" comment tons of times. I understand I kind of do but I do it to race. I won't stay like that forever because I think it is probably as unhealthy as being overweight. I do feel strong and fast though
Doesn't help that it looks like I am on meth... I am not btw.

Dude! In what world do you look like you're on meth?! I'm 5'11" and about 207 right now. You're giving me hope I can get back down to 170, where I sat for about 20 years. You do not look like a meth head.

So glad I found this thread. I will be 59 in June and have been on every diet possible since I was 15. Never took gym class, always overweight or told I was. Have 3 kids but when expecting my son gained over 50 lbs and stayed over 200 since he was born in 1981. Around 2004 I got down to 199 doing WW then my leader got done and I couldnt find a new one and quit. I had also started riding but always have done between 10 and 15 mile stints. Have done some commuter also but its only 5 miles one way.
Fast forward to March 16 20013. My hubby and I took the 2 oldest grandchildren to a Celtics game that evening in Boston. We took the subway to Faneuil Hall and had to do some walking and stairs. I couldnt keep up and was gimping somewhat also.16 y/o grand daughter kept asking if I was ok and looking back at me worried. We went back to Boston Garden had a great time etc. On the ride home she said"Nana I am worried about you. I need you here for me when I have kids someday too" Still bring tears to my eyes as it did hers." So I found a great personal trainer named Vicki at Fitwise Personal Training in Manchester NH. She rides and does Bi and Triathalons. She listens and works around some old injuries and health issues. I do have HBP and mild COPD even though I quit smoking in my late 30's. So I started training with Vicki on 4/1/2013. When she weighed me that first timeat 269 on a 5'5" height I was flabbergasted in more ways than one. I have had a hard adjustment to trying to eat clean. I have lost 30 lbs and just as important 26.5 in overall. Feeling better! Hoping to get my HBP meds lowered my next physical. I did have issues thru the holidays and fell back on some old bad habits. Looking to increase my mileage on my bike and to be under 200 by 6/8 my 59th birthday. Sorry this got so long but so happy to find other in the same boat!

Good work - keep it up
Here's a couple of ideas for you:
Consider Vegetarianism - if you eat a plant based diet, losing weight is almost automatic if you eat thoughtfully.
Supplement bike riding with spin classes - I've been spinning for about a year, usually around 4 times per week in addition to my bike riding and it really helps. Burns calories and raises metabolism plus kills appetite.
If you become gungho about physical fitness, weight loss is sure to follow. I'm maintaining 210 (within 15 pounds of ideal) and eating everything I want. Soon to be 70 and still able to do a century.

Thanks for answering! I do eat alot of veggies (we have a CSA)but cant go without meat. Mostly chicken and turkey. I have done some spinning, but trying to get used to the trainer my husband bought me for Christmas. I have got to say, love being able to sit on my own bike with my own seat. I work with the trainer an hour a week and am lifting weights for homework twice a week and doing the elliptical and/or the bike twice a week. This just started on 1/1. Congrats on being 70 still riding a century!

A huge problem I have is... We raise beef in the family! My father-in-law raises beef. It is all grass fed and rotationally grazed of which you can read both that it is much better or not a whole lot different than corn fed. He does have a masters degree in agronomy and has been into farming (he's not a farmer in the sense that he has a farm, but has always grown his own food) and I do trust him when he says it is much better than store bought packed in and force fed corn beef.
I've got about 20 rib-eyes and 30 t-bones sitting in the freezer that I didn't pay a dime for. How the heck am I suppose to sit down and eat a plate of horrid rabbit food with that sitting in the freezer, LOL.

Oh boy do I know what you mean about the meat. I have both high blood pressure and pretty high cholesterol. I eat beef, in quantities that I don't think is a lot but it probably is.

I'm 55, 6'1" and 235. Heaviest I've been and what used to be easy to drop 5, 10, 15 lbs----is now most difficult.
Took up riding my 1995 Trek hybrid and changing how I eat and drink. Went out and bought a new hybrid and dedicating myself to get under 200 lbs. This forum is good motivation!
