06 Rockhopper Comp Disc vs Kona Hoss opinions PLEASE
I am >< this close to buying either of these two bikes...I am 225 and 6'1". I want something light enuff to climb like a goat, yet have the frame strength not to shatter on the odd log hop...( I noticed the RH COMP in the 21" frame seperates the top tube and the down tube from the neck with no gusseting...!! makes me nervous)
I do single track XC..... Lemme know what size frame you like....and if you any preferences...hoping to pick either one up for end of season clearance around $800 CAN.. THx T |
Both are good bikes. I would go for the Kona just because I have been riding them for years. Plus I feel the Hoss has a stronger frame and would handle my style of rinding better.
For Xc riding I would say go for the specialized. It will be a bit lighter. At 6'1" a 21" frame might very well be to big. It would be great for climbing but you would get a very uneasy feeling if you encounter any tight,steep switchbacks or rough terrain. I am 6'2" with a 34 1.2" inseam and I, for XC riding, would not go bigger then a 19". You want the bike to be nimble enough for tight turns, rough terrain and allow you to get far enough back when you descend a steep hill with out having the feeling that you are about to go over the bars. If you have ape arms (read long) or a long torso, then putting a longer stem on and moving the saddle back will do the trick. MSF:beer: |
I am 6'3" 300 lbs. I own the rockhopper comp disc. It has stood up to my mass very well over the last few months of pounding on the trails. In fact only one thing has gone wrong and that was a broken spoke. No big deal considering my weight and that i was going very slow around a downhill turn on pavement with really sticky tires. Thats a lot of tortion :)
So, don't worry about the frame strength! The Specialized has better components and is probably lighter overall, which wasn't a concern for me! :-p I love the Tora fork. I would get whichever one you could get cheaper. http://members.dslextreme.com/users/...keRhcdSide.jpg |

Go with the Rockhopper. I rode both, and can definitely say that the Rockhopper is a faster, more nimble bike. IIRC the price is a little better, too.
Check out the '07 Rockhopper. Components got a little bump, and the frame is much closer to the '06 Stumpjumper. Very hot bike, I'd consider one if I didn't lust over the SJ so much :) |
IMHO, you can't go wrong with either the Kona or the Specialized. In general, I like Konas, but I must admit that Specialized has a KICKIN' line of bikes too. In fact, I just bought a base-level Rockhopper ('06 model), and although I liked the Konas, the Specialized dealer was closer & friendlier and that swayed my final decision. I've had no reason to regret the choice - the 'Hopper is everything I'd hoped it would be. Since the two lines are so close, let the dealer be the deciding factor - you can't go wrong either way.

Well I bit the bullet. I shelled out for the Hoss DELUXE... I was leaning towards the RH Comp but a few factors edged me towards the HOSS... THe Hoss fork is steel, as opposed to the RH Alum. The frame is stronger on the HOSS...as the dealer said "they don't call it the HOSS for nothing" THe Hoss came with hydraulics....and the componentry was a bit better. Also the Hoss came in a 20" frame...and considering I was torn between the nimbleness of the 19" and the goat-like ability of a 21", the fact that the Hoss came in a 20" struck my like the right hand of god!!!...Some might say the RH is lighter by a pound or two but I got to thinking...if eat or bagel, or drink another coffee, or don't have my morning "S..S...and S" I make up the difference...lets be honest I am 224 lbs I don't need to be worrying about grams here or there..!! and the most deciding factor was the price.... Toronto has an annual Fall bike clearance show this weekend....so I talked my lbs into giving me show pricing and no TAX.....in the end I saved about $500 AND I don't have to fight the crowds.....the damn CROWDS!!

I think FarHorizon called it right. You're trying to decide between two first rate line of bikes. I can only add that I own an 05 Rockhopper. I'm 5 foot 9 inches and I was 225 when I purchased the bike (lossed a little weight since then). I only ride technical trails with plenty of log jumps with this bike. I've never had a problem with anything breaking and my bike was one of the demo bikes for the LBS I bought it from. It had seen enough abuse to justify a new chain and cassette before I bought it. So I don't think the type of riding you're planning will create a problem with the Rockhopper. By the way, I went with a smaller, 17 inch frame to handle switchbacks. I'm very glad I went smaller rather than larger. IMHO the bike is much easier to handle.
