    Folded a sprocket in half today

    So I took my 2002 Specialized Rockhopper out for a spin today after installing my new Geax Blade tires. I wanted to see how good the traction on these will be as I got them for snow use. Its not snowing yet so I take them on my lawn. Im in the small cog up front and the third from biggest in the rear. So lets see if these baby's will grip or spin. I stand up and mash the pedals. The front wheel lifts off and they hook amazing. It just rained a little bit so the ground is not muddy but very dense and thick. This is fun, let me do it again. I go to pedal real hard again and the pedals jump real fast. I look down. Oh the chain fell off....wait....the front sprocket is bent in half. Guess they hook a little to good and/or I can generate way to much torque (I weigh 265).

    Yep, that Clydesdale Power! Now you know why you can do such a strong short sprint, it's all about torque then!

    Looks to me more like someone forgot a bolt or didn't tighten one enough.

    Just a little nitpicking...um! nitpicking... on the crank they are called chainrings. Sprockets on on the wheel. Don't know why but that's the convention.

    Looks like a litle rust may have weakened the situation as well. Wow. It is a wonder I still have teeth on my sprockets.

    By the way, what is the lifespan of a sprocket and chain? My teeth are looking pretty worn and I am experiencing some chain slippage.

    I think typically between 2K - 4K depending on how you ride, take care of the chain/gears, etc...

    And damn man - good job. I came close to doing that on my large chainring - started bending but were too worn to bend it all the way.

    Just got new Sugino cranks though - yay!

    Ok we can say it was a loose bolt, or a little rust, but you have to admit that is WAY COOL! If that was me I would be bragging about that one for years to come.

    Very cool, and if I were you I would show those pictures to everyone I know.

    You didn't need that small charinring anyways. It just slows you down. Remove it, adjust the FD so you can't overshift and keep on trucking.

    I did that with my cheap alivio alu chain ring. I shifted but the shifter wasn´t well adjusted and then I powered too soon going up a hill and just bent the chain ring in half. Then to get home I had to hammer the chain ring flat with a rock- a real caveman repair. After that I put a steel chain ring on.

    Way to go I have done one similar as well tore the chainring loose and shot the bolt through a bank window. Needless to say paying for a window was not cool, but that's HEAVY METAL DESTRUCTION!!!!

    Wouldn't standing on the pedals be more effective as far as hill climbing goes?

    Damn it chain ring bolts, one more thing I have to check.
    2000 Montague CX, I do not recommend it, but still ride it.
    Strida 3, I recommend it for rides < 10mi wo steep hills.
    2006 Rowbike 720 Sport, I recommend it as an exercise bike.
    1996 Birdy, Recommend.
    Wieleder CARiBIKE (folding), decent frame.
