Ksyrium SL--suitable for 220lb rider?
To me the spoke count looks awefully low, but reviews indicate they are bombproof--for lighter riders. Any clydes out here riding them? What do you think?

I'm looking at a pair too (SL's or Elite's--not sure yet). My LBS didn't hesitate in recommending them. I have ridden a rear Aksium (lower-end then Ksyriums) for a week on loan from the LBS. It seemed rock-solid, no flexing even on the hills or accelerations.
Lickbike.com has Ksyrium Elite's on sale for $478 and probikekit.com has SL's on sale for $702. Those are the lowest prices I've seen.

For < $500 you can have Mike Garcia build you a set of wheels to fit your specific needs and they will likely weigh less than either wheelset mentioned above. I'm ~230lbs and when my Xero XR-1s (16f 20r BTW) started to crack, MG built me a set of Velocity Aeroheads for $414 shipped to my door. They weighed in at 1494g and he guarantees his work.
To answer your original question, I think 20 spokes in the rear is too few. Just my $.02.

I'm 255 ... LBS highly recommended them. I actually suggested a more expensive wheel that he had in stock ... but recommended the SL's and had to order them. It's a really good store ... I know the owner fairly well, so I trust him.

I have a set of Ksyrium ES, I am 220LB. I bought them used on eBay, so I don't know how many total miles they have on them, but I have ridden them well over 4000 miles in the past 8 months, bunny hop over speed bumps, etc and they are as true as when I got 'em.

I have the Ksyrium Equipes (one point lower than the elites), but they've been rock solid for over 3k miles. Still true, even after all the abuse i put into them (~205, not quite as clyde as some of you, but def. not a light guy either)

Had a set of Ksyrium Elites for 3,500kms (currently 230lbs) and they were fine in terms of staying true - did get some flex in the front wheel when up out of the saddle climbing.
The SLs are very strong (better than the ES). I just upgraded the Elites to a set of Fulcrum Racing 1s. Only 500kms on them so far but the are very stiff and noticeably firmer than the Elites.
Nice alternative to the SLs and I found them for less coin.

I just got a set of Mavic Ksyrium SL's a couple of months ago. I'm between 215-220 lbs and so far they've been good.

One partner Lee, 210 lbs,strong rider told me they were rock solid after he rode them for a couple of months. A month later, broke a rear spoke.
270 lb friend Jack said they were rock solid. Couple of months later broke a spoke. Retired from riding so no updates.
220 lb double century rider SemperFi (Larry) had them on his roadie. Found several cracks around the nipples of the rear. Had it replaced them more problems after that. Replaced them with Velomax wheels. Retired from the forums so no updates on the Velomax.
A 165 lb rider (don't remember name) was riding along side me on a 5k foot mtn climb. Preaching to me that I should ditch my heavy Ultegra/Deep V wheels. As he's preaching he feels somthing funny in his front wheel. Stops to check it. Front hub was falling apart (came unscrewed?). Stated he had used Supergo housebrand Korso wheels (black with red label/$199 sale/) with no problems and very durableafter thousands of miles.
190 lb partner buys an $8,000 Time bike. While riding he here's this awful ticking noise in the wheels. Took it back to the shop, checked it out, readjusted, still awful noise present. Shop warranties the wheel and replaces with a new one after several attempts. Within the last few rides so no updates on the wheel yet.
At 230, I wouldn't drop $800 bux on 'em! Maybe for my wife's bike, but not my heavy butt!
