The Lard Speed Record thread

I had a nice long stretch of road today, and I'd just pumped my hybrid's slicks up to 85 PSI before I left to run some errands. I had about 5 miles of errand-running for warming up, and decided I'd go for a ride instead of going home.

I set a new lard speed record for myself today at 41.0 MPH using my Diamondback Outlook hybrid on slicks, which is also my commuter.

I figured it would be fun to see what other people are topping out at, and what they're riding.

I need NOS! Two bottles! The Big Ones!!!

My lard speed record is 57MPH on a downhill. Between 50 and somewhere around 55, I developed a death wobble (Harmonic vibration from the two wheels), but is steadied out. Scary feeling though!

My speed attempts

Over 48 mph on my recumbent measured by my Cateye, very stable at high speed. In addition, a estimated 50+ (maybe 55 mph it felt way faster) on my old tour bike on a very steep long downhill, completely scary. Bad part is a truck pulled out slowly at the bottom of the hill and I could not stop, since the pads started overheating and fading. Fortunately, he got out of the way in time and by then I was doing about 30 mph. Did 30 mph on the flat, on my recumbent, nothing that fast on my tour bike though.

swisstim 03-25-07 03:51 AM

My lard speed record is probably upwards of 90kmh - 55mph in real money - which I did coming down the Oberalp here in Switzerland. Just as we started down, I was overtaken by a German tourist who had his backwindow full of suitcases. I tucked in behind and slipstreamed down for a bit, got up a hairy speed. Probably the one of the stupidest things I've ever done on the bike, but what a rush. I was so into it I never even thought to look at the speedo. By the time I did have a glance I was coasting and still doing 60.

VeloDüd 03-25-07 04:00 AM

It was on one of the shortest steep roads I've been on. It was 10 blocks long in Troutdale, OR. My bro and I were riding pretty fast following my map directions when we crested this slight hill and saw a super steep grade. We looked at each other and went all out, topping out at 57 mph. Then we noticed at the bottom that it was the end of the road with store front shops and a stop sign! Barely stopped in time to not get creamed by a car. Definitely worth the effort.

bdinger 03-25-07 04:47 PM

Since getting my Trek, I've hit 37 mph a couple times. Today, however, was the most fun. I went about a mile doing 27-29mph on a flat stretch - yay for 30mph tailwinds perfectly behind you! :D

There's a stretch on the same MUP that's maybe a 1% downslope that I hit 27mph on regularly since I got my Trek.

Both on a '07 Trek 7.3FX

gmule 03-25-07 06:14 PM

My lard speed is also 41 mph. That was on a down hill wearing baggie shorts and a back pack on my GF hardtail. Gravity loves the fat man ;D

DieselDan 03-25-07 07:43 PM

Mine is 48 mph on a rain slicked road in Edgfeild County, SC with a group of riders out of Augusta, GA. They kept yelling at me to ride the brakes and slow down.

I kept a steady 32mph in a paceline with a current ProTour rider on the Cross Island Pkwy. on Hilton Head Island, SC

I hit 35 mph in a sprint trying to win a race, I got 3rd at MCAS Beaufort.

On a solo flat, 28mph with a tailwind on US 21 on Lady's Island.

bdinger 03-26-07 09:22 AM

heh, interestingly I ride across some train tracks every day on my commute. Every time I ride across them my wireless computer goes wacky, and records some crazy high speed. Right now my max speed, according to the computer, is 77mph :D

Normally I'm going about 29mph on that stretch, I think I'd notice if I jumped up to 77 :D

ax0n 03-26-07 10:51 AM

I think the train tracks are hiding a space/time portal.

scottmorrison99 03-26-07 11:22 AM

My lard speed record is 42.4 MPH followed almost immediately by a crash I am still healing up from. Note to self: Do not try to set lard speed record on windy roads.

krazygluon 03-26-07 01:15 PM

50..wow. 34.6mph is my personal best while riding in Ky, the land of frequently repeating hills. A computer log of my speed during my commute would look something like a sine-wave bouncing between 14 and 30 every 10 minutes occaisionally flattening at 20-24 during the rare relatively flat sections of road.

superdex 03-26-07 01:17 PM

I hit 49mph last year descending Fremont Pass into Leadville. Wheeee!

bigbossman 03-26-07 01:32 PM

56.3 mph coming down the backside of Sage Hen Summit east of Mono Lakes, CA. Thin air, a bit of a tailwind, and my weight combined for a very memorable descent.

Since then, I try to keep the bike in check a little bit. I recently crashed on a 30mph descent, and it wasn't a lot of fun. I imagine going rag-doll at 50mph+ would be horrifying, and I don't have any good crashes left in me.

Catherine+2 03-27-07 02:57 PM

35 mph last weekend. Not much, compared to you all, but I thought it was very brave of me since I was riding a tandem/trailer bike rig with my 5 yo twins. They were yelling, but it sounded like cheers, not screams of terror, so we kept going. We live on a mountain side. Riding (and walking) up hill to the park was really a drag, but riding back down to our house (all on paved streets) was a thrill.

Back when I was a teen (still an Athena, but a fit, much-thinner one) I hit over 50 (and burned out my analog speedometer) coming down a pass in Colorado. I was riding with a church group tour and got left behind, so I just cranked it up, tucked down close, and tried to catch up. The chase van kept pulling in front of me braking, trying to get me to slow down. 15 miles later I caught up with the pack and slowed down to their more leisurely speed of about 45 mph.

Of course, just because I survived riding down mountain passes with no helmet at 50+ mph doesn't mean I will allow my own kids to pull similar crazy stunts! No, I'll put them on our tandem (WITH helmets) and we'll go for speed records together!

Same location for me... I hit 53 mph and started to panic. I immediately assume I would wipe out (I like you don't have many more crashes left inme - right now I'm almost the bionic woman) and fly over the side and land gosh knows where so I started brake. I was picking up speed before then so who knows how fast I could have topped.

I have never been able to top 30 mph on a flat. It's my goal...someday if I can stay healthy and stop from crashing and having surgeries and the like...

pj7 03-27-07 06:03 PM

I got no clue what my fastest speed is, and don't rightly care. ;)
So long as I make it safely and enjoy the ride, I'm happy with that.

WheresWaldo 03-27-07 06:52 PM

About 40mph since becoming a Clydesdale. Pre-Clydesdale it was 72mph coming down the back side of McKensie pass into Sisters, OR

(51) 03-27-07 08:18 PM

My God I admire your courage! I hit 22 mph going down a bridge and I am on the brakes...Cause I know if I go down I'm going to break something.

themickeyd 03-28-07 01:48 PM

Down hill I have managed 48 mph on a short but really steep down hill section, scared the bejezus out of me since I didn't think I would go that fast but also my rear wheel was a bit out of round. But at that speed it felt like it was square!

On the flats I got clocked at 27 by one of those road side radar units that the Police put up and show your speed. I was the only one around so I think it must have been pretty close.

CliftonGK1 03-28-07 03:03 PM

I top out around 36-37mph down 175th to the center of Woodinville every day. It's really nice when the light at the end of the runout is green, and I can just whip right through and carry my speed on the flat through the center of town. It sucks when the light's red and traffic's backed up just as I come around the turn.

vpiuva 03-28-07 03:20 PM

49mph's the max speed I've hit on a relatively short but steep downhill just south of B'ham, AL on my Casati. Last night's group ride was buzzing along at 28 for a while, but I can sustain that solo for short stretches only.

Hehe - I wish! One of those weird spedometer things.

I think 37 or so, too much traffic for much faster than that.

ken cummings 03-28-07 09:20 PM

I pulled out all the lard speed record stops once. Coming back from a loaded touring trip in my overweight fully streamlinned recumbent trike through thin air down the steep I-70 frontage road into Denver I hit 70 MPH on my old Pacer 2000 bike computer. A near death experience.

Halthane 03-28-07 09:25 PM

I hit 36 or so in the flats of one my newly discovered roads this sunday. Thanks the same winds that axOn and bdinger were probably using, man it was windy that day. 5 miles straight into it, giving 100% and going 8 miles an hour, but I abolustely flew home :)

dude, you can't use three other magnets on your spokes to balance the wheels!

I gotta tell you, put a piece of coal in my ass and make my bike go some of the speeds you folks are talking about and I'd finish the ride with some bling for Mrs. Hambone.

Back in my tri racing days, I hit some scary speeds on some crummy roads.
Anyone from Cleveland can attest to the cruddy condition of Northpark Rd (I think that's what it's called) heading from Shaker Lakes into downtown. I hit 47mph coming down that one during the Nat'l CitiCorp tri.
I used to bomb down this hill on Rt. 91 from Twinsburg to Hudson (Cleveland 'burbs), and routinely get up over 45mph.
Now, I'm OK with topping out at ~35mph on my beater old MTB. I don't need to go any faster than that. Honestly, I don't want to go any faster than that.

How about a magnet/spoke! Lesee, 36 spokes, 53 mph?

36(53)=1908 MPH!

1908/760= Mach 2.51!:p
