Hey all,

I posted this in the Road Cycling Forum but I wanted to post it here too. I hope that's alright?

Do any of you have a Trek 1000c, if so, what are you thoughts of the Bike? I was in my LBS today and I test rode a 2005 model and was quite surprised at the ride of that bike. I have worked out a deal to get the price at $500.00 or just under it a bit. Would that be a good deal? Or are there other offerings in that price range that I should look at. I'm 5' 11" I am 250 lbs and I am 49 years old. My goal is to ride on the road 20-30 miles a day to help lose weight and then keep it off. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

At 250, you should have no issues with a Trek 1000. I have a friend here in town that rode a Trek 1000 fully loaded in an unsupported Trans Am last year, and her weight and gear load put her at not to far under that at 200 pounds load on the bike. It held up nicely! Matter of fact, she's out riding the Underground Railroad Route right now!

I have a 1200 (same frame/wheel set as the 1000) and I started riding it at 250. I have had to get the rear wheel re-trued twice in over 2000 miles.

The first thing you should do is ditch the rear tire. Its garbage. I had 10 flats in the first 300 miles. I upgraded to the Bontrager hard case select and haven't had a flat in 1700 miles.

I got a used 2005 Trek 1000 on eBay last year. Don't really know how many miles were on it, but the stock tyres were already changed for Specialized All Condition, 23mm. I am 250 pounds and have had no problems in 880 miles except for brakes. The stock pads were very poor gripping. I've read the same thing from others regards the stock pads. I changed to KoolStop pads which solved the problem for me.

Now I bought a second set of the same Alex 450 wheels, used, on ebay. They have not been trouble free. Broke 4 spokes so far on rear wheel. Spokes very low tension, and probably wheels were used many 1000s of miles and spokes stressed out. Would think this would not be a problem with new bike. $500 sounds good to me, maybe you can get LBS to throw in gloves or helmet, bottle cage?

If you are breaking spokes with these wheels you are riding too heavy in the saddle. I was 260# when I first got my 1200 and quickly learned how to ride a bit more lightly in response to several pinch flats that I had. 2000 miles later (and 50#'s) the rear wheel is only slightly out of true. I ride through some really crappy roads too.

I agree on the brake pads though. I also upgraded to the KoolStop pads.

I bought a new 2006 Trek 1000 last year and have enjoyed it a lot. I started riding at 290ish. After the first week I noticed a loose spoke but after taking it to the shop for adjustment I never had any more issues.
