century cherry popped

I did it!!! my first century is in the books. I am signed up to do a two day double century ride April 21, 22 so i found a new century ride in my area (Blue Line 100) that supports the police unity tour. We couldn't have asked for a better ride.

I had several unofficial metric rides under my belt but was nervous about going the extra miles. I felt great at the beginning and decided i would try to keep up with the meadheads @ 21 mph. After the bravado wore off and reality set it, I realized that was a big mistake. I joined up with a group of between 4 and 6 riders at different times. (its great having a familiar face to ride with). We got through the ride in a little over 6 hours with actual ride time of 5:23 averaging 17.6 mph according to my computer.

It helped that the SAGs were manned and stocked well. Its funny, on all of the rides I've taken before this century ride I usually consumed a gel or two for energy and stayed away from solid foods for fear of an upset stomach. This time i had a sandwich, banana, and copious amounts of water with a sports drink thrown in here and there.

The only issue i had was a strained left quad (hip flexor) tendon. its still a little sore a weeks later but i'm getting back on the bike tomrrow to get in that last week of hard training for the double century. i can't wait.

ya know. my only regret about cycling is that i didn't get into it earlier.

Excellent work. How long have you been training?

I hear TOSRV south is supposed to be a hoot. A friend of mine did it a few years ago and she keeps trying to tell me to go (but alas, I'll be in Spain, I know, it's a sacrifice I must make).

Have fun on the camping trip! Don't forget to post a trip report.

Congrats on the ride!! Excellent time as well!! Good work!

sorry it's taken so long to reply.

i trained by doing about 100 miles or so per week. that equated to about 3 or 4 30 or 40 mile rides per week.
i also got in some 60 or 65 milers also. i did this for about 6 months (after being off the bike for 3 months due to a cycling accident).

You're my hero! I've done half-centuries, but am still waiting for that landmark hundred. In any case, CONGRATULATIONS!
