    Losing Weight but Expanding Waist?

    Ever have this happen? My scale shows a slow dropping of weight, but my pants are getting tighter in the waist. I am doing stretches to improve my balance and work my abs; could that be having an effect? Or is it loose skin piling up? Any suggestions?

    I know my quads are getting bigger, but I have an explanation for that. :-)

    I've had that happen to me as a result of losing weight. I'm 52, and 2 1/2 years ago, lost around 80lbs. The skin on my waist and thighs have never caught up. Even though the fat has been replaced by muscle, the skin remains.

    I have a different problem at the moment. As spring approaches, my activity level (mileage and intensity) has about tripled on bike over the last couple of weeks, yet I've gained 5 lbs over the course of that time. Not sure if my body is trying to compensate for the additional caloric demands I'm making of it or what.

    Likely, it is loose skin. Do some crunches if your back is up to it. Start easy though and work up to each next goal in stages. That will start flattening the abdominals down.

    Maybe your weight is moving south?

    Although I haven't lost much weight, my weight has transferred from gut and fatback to strong legs and butt. I guess I have too much junk in my trunk now

    Let me guess,you're riding more. It's happened to me in the past. My arm muscle diminishs, the pants fit tighter, then by the early summer,the gut shrinkage catches-up. When I lose even a few pounds,I draw my pants up higher,I don't even notice that I'm doing it,I'll bet you haven't noticed that yet,look down at the cuffs.

    Crunches and squats are big no-nos for me. Will other abdominal exercises work as well?

    I'm riding period. I only learned how to ride in December, and I only started to get in real mileage about six weeks ago. But your answer, as well as Tom's, makes sense.

    I already have pant length problems because of my two months in physical therapy working on my scoliosis and my left knee with a partial extension. I've gained about an inch and a half in height since January. But I guess this is a good problem to have.

    They should, and that's the reason I said "if your back can stand them". I'll research some methods suitable for scoliosis. I have a PT person in my health psych class and email some suggestions.

    OK. I'd like to prepare a future post for my blog on an exercise routine for cyclists with scoliosis; may I quote the information you are sending? If not, I'll paraphrase and leave names out.

    Good old walking at a brisk pace will do wonders for lower abs, back and glutes. You can always add ankle weights. Also,there are numerous exercise you can do safely on a fitness ball that will work wonders for trunk strength.

    I dunno why the weight going south should bring to my gutter of a mind the chest of an elderly woman, just tuck them in your pants dear...........oh my god now I need to get that thought from my mind with a quick pedal up n down LangStr.

    I hope my waist goes down after I start riding this week. I need to drop down from 38 so I can fit some new jeans that are 36. I think that alone would make me happy and anything I lose beyond that is just icing on the cake. I have a hard time finding pants I like in a waist size I need so I want to just wear these jeans.

    I think the problem here is that the waist, for some people, is the last place they lose weight.

    So the rest of you is shrinking, but the waist is hanging in there and so seems like it is growing.

    Did you actually measure your waist and it got larger? Or did you try on new pants that fit through the thigh and butt and the waist is no?
