I posted a response to another thread but thought I'd start a new one to introduce myself.
About four months ago I weighed in at an unquestionable clysdale qualifying level of 427 pounds:( . I'm 53 years old, out of shape and have bad arthritis in both knees. I knew I had to do something as the recliner model traing wasn't turning into anything productive! I now weigh 354 pounds :D - still way too much for 6 ft tall, but I'm encouraged I can get fit and healthy because unlike other attempts this time I'm exercising 7 days per week. I weight train 3 days per week and added bike riding 4 to 5 days a week for aerobic exercise. I turned to the bike in an attempt to do something fun - it worked!
Now, the first ride a few weeks ago wasn't a lot of fun. In fact it was short - only lasted about 10 minutes, but I am trying to stay with it. Yesterday I rode for almost an hour and traveled about 5.4 miles. I know that isn't much yet but we have to start somewhere.
My first bike after many years is an Electra Townie - foot on ground part appealed to me. It really is a great bike but the crank forward position comes with comprimises. Even though I've only had it a few weeks I am looking for a new bike to move up to. I've decided on a Trek 7500 if my LBS can still get one - he'll know Monday. If not I'll buy a Gary Fisher Nirvana which will work fine. I'm just not ready for the road bike riding position but my goal is to do a century ride within the next couple of years. Before I do I'll buy a raod bike.
I really enjoy the forum and hope to be a contributing member for a long time.
