doesn't shift into correct gear

forgive the newbie question, but i am having some trouble with my bike.

I normally ride in 2-4, 2-5, or 2-6... I start from a stop sign in 2-3. I know that when I shift I should be pedaling...

The problem is that when I shift from 2-6 to 2-5 and sometimes from 2-4 to 2-5 it doesn't go into gear. Also, when Im riding in 2-4 or 2-5 it makes a sound like its inbetween shifts.

THe bike was brand new when I bought it and I probably have somewhere in the neighborhood of 80~100 miles, mostly ALL paved trails.

Sounds like the the cables need to be adjusted. If you don't know how, you'll probably want to take it back to the LBS and have them do it.

+1 on the adjustment.

The inner cables tend to stretch and this should be a quick repair for you. In most cases, after the initial stretch, it should not need another adjustment.

If you want to give it a go check out this link (you can probably skip the limit screw section (unless you can shift too far (rattle in the big or small cog (or the chain just comes off...)) and go for the adjustment section. Or you can try fiddling with the barrel on your derailer.

Sounds like cable stretch needing to be adjusted out. The link to park tool is a good one. You might also take a look at sheldon's website

I find his stuff a little more practical for folks who aren't mechanically inclined. But I imagine that may have more to do with personal preference. The whole website is good reading for any cyclist really.

well, I took it to my LBS. It wasn't where I bought the bike from, but its right down the street. THey were slow so they threw my bike up on the rack, they adjusted the rear derailer and also did a quick retrue on the rear rim for me. I took the bike down the path and back and it shifts GREAT now. I get back and they didn't even charge me. I felt obligated to buy something, so I picked up a second water bottle cage and water bottle.

That's a great LBS and I bet you'll seriously consider buying your next bike there. Glad everything worked out.

My friends were looking for a new bike, and I was telling them the experience I had, and I told them that a smaller LBS won't give you the deal, but you will get personalized service, vs. a larger bike shop will give them a good deal, but will not be nearly as personalized...

Kozy cycle is a sponsor here and they have a shop down the street from my buddies house. Hopefully my buddy buys a bike today, I would love some more people to ride with...
