Genetics have failed me

I'm on my way *woohooo*
I normally weigh myself every Sunday to check for my progress in my quest to get down to 170-180lb where I used to be before I moved to the USA in 1998.
5 weeks ago I threw myself on the scale and it clocked in at 211lb *ouch* and I said to myself, enough is enough and from that day I picked up bicycling again and started with 10 miles/day for the first week. Picked up the distance the 2nd week and increased to 15-20 miles/day. I tried to ride my trusty old Columbus framed road bike every day as much as I could (sometimes that wasn't possible with 2 youngins and a dog in the house).
So the week after I consistently rode 20 miles/day and while I worked out and cycled my butt off I also took control over my sweet tooth habits like ice cream scoop control (I used to fill a bowl with ice cream to the rim and have fun with it) and completely cut out pop or any other sugar water and replaced it with nothing but water.
So, yesterday the scale showed 198.8lb. Yeah baby... I'm on the road to a healthier weight!
It feels good to fit in to the pants from 2 years ago again.

I'm from Germany originally. Much more bike friendly and bike lanes in all major cities. The lifestyle change was somewhat of a shock to be honest but I think I am starting to slowly adjust. I used to bike a lot over there. I even rode through the Pyrenees where the Tour de France went through yesterday, but uhmmm... I had to give up after a few hundred yards, the incline is absolutely incredible and it boggles my mind how those professional riders can climb those mountains and back then I was no slouch when it came to cycling.
But I'm back on track, I enjoy riding my bike again since I've discovered a few nice bike path in my area. Also I'm starting to realize I can't do anything about it when I have to ride on the street to get to a bike path. If I'm mowed down by some idiot driver then so be it, I tried my hardest to avoid it.
It's really sad to see how basically anyone can hop in a 4000lb weapon after a laughable drivers test (hell, the motorcycle permit test is harder) and shoot down the city streets in an uneducated manner when I had to spend 40 hours behind the wheel + 12 weeks of classroom drivers education + 1.5hour driving test which I almost flunked because I forgot to look left and right while crossing some train tracks.
But enough ranting, the job market is better in the US and that's the reason why I'm here.

After riding motorcycles for so many years I've learned that the cars see the white Police motorcycles just fine (I used to own one)but fail to see any others. Hmmmm. If I were to ride a bike in a big city again I think I would have some black T-shirts made up with big white letters on the back that spell P O L I C E. I'd be willing to bet the cars would not only see you but avoid you like the plague!
