3) about 5 years ago my wife and I watched a TV show that featured
a cycling trip that crossed Italy from the Adriatic to the Mediterranean.
She said something like 'wouldn't that be wonderful'. It sounded impossible;
I was massively overweight, we were riding, but not far. So I said 'Let's do it'.
And we did.
About 15 feet before I hit the curb!
Of course I was quite young!
I remember as a young lad I would ride my bike down the street and then walk it back up. I can still remember the day I rode back up the street. I ran in to tell my parents I did it.
As a fat adult I rode about 1/2 of a mile, came home, buttered my knees with Flexall 454 and curled up on the couch. My longest has been 40 miles on my 40th birthday. I'm looking to do a metric or standard century this winter.
Surprised? Not yet.

1.) 6 miles when I started out 5 weeks ago. Before that time? Don't remember.
2.) 28 miles just a few days ago.
3.) I was definitely surprised how fast I was able to build up endurance when I was climbing day in/day out for 2 weeks in the massif central. The first 2 days I had to push my bike a lot uphill, from day 3 on it improved rapidly. That was eye opening and mind blowing. But then, I was 20 back then. Maybe during that age it's easier to take the body to the limit.

3) I though in 1984 when I sold my red Sekine, that I probably wasn't going to ride again, surprised the heck out of myself when I bought my Blue Norco in 2004. What I haven't surprised myself with is the fact, that I started changing things as soon as I got it, I've done that with every bike I have ever owned:D
My first ride was about three feet going down the driveway when I was five. My first ride when I got back on the bike last year was about two miles.
My longest one day ride is 102 miles.
I'm surprised I'm still alive, given a lot of things I've done and gotten away with over the years. With specific reference to cycling, Yes, I'm surprised that I've grown to like it so much and also what I've been able to do since getting back on a bike just a bit over a year ago.
I've lost 16 pounds so far since I started riding the bike a month ago. I was hoping to loose 5 pounds a month. :D

- Longest was today. I don't know how far but rode for 2 1/2 hours on asphalt with only a 10 min. break!(I just found the handle bar mount for my GPS so I will now be able to see mileage,speed etc.)
- VERY SURPRISED! I've only been riding for 4 weeks now, two miles on gravel every morning and just at a casual 60-65 cadence(guessing 8-10 mph)pace.

Back in high school (25 years ago) I rode about 20 miles a day. I stopped riding shortly after graduation.
I started riding again a few years ago (on a Trek Navigator 300 in Poland). Back then, I would often look back on my high school days and think "I'll never again be able to do 20 miles in a day."
How wrong I was. In the past month I've done two "imperial centuries" and one metric century, and I can't wait to do more. This might be an addiction, but there are definitely worse things in this world to be addicted to...

- yes I've surprised myself, I've ridden for nearly 12 years now, and I've always surprised myself when I've went further and longer than I thought I could do. It's been great and I want to ride for as long as I can.

How long was your first ride?
When I started back up again this past August (2006), I could only manage about ten miles, mostly due to butt/crotch discomfort (I used to ride/race from 1988 'til 1997). But I could only do this at a quite sedate 10-12mph.
How long was your longest one day ride?
Since my re-engagement, I rode a century about 2 month's ago (102 miles). No problems and I finished the last 10-15 miles at a nice 20mph average speed and with energy to spare. Although going into it, I was a bit scared because my training in the 6-weeks preceding was not the best for the event. I am currently planning on 3 more centuries in the next two months: the Cool Breeze (where I'll be trying to set a personal best time of sub-6 hours), the Moonlight Magic, and the High Sierra Fall Centuries. Anyone wanna join me?
Have you surprised yourself?
Not in my distances. In the years I have ridden, I realized that going longer distances is easier than it looks or sounds. What has surprised me is the fitness level I have achieved in the short 8-10 months since I took up riding again, and my (somewhat) success in racing. I think I am enjoying more success now than my previous racing life.
I am finishing up the racing season now (1-more race after tomorrow) and will be shifting my focus over to long-distance rides (centuries and double-metrics) on the week-ends instead of races (~15-20 mile criteriums). I am also going to try and drop more weight (it's been terribly slow-going the last 3-4 months!) before racing season begins again in February/March of 2008.

I haven't ridden a bike in maybe 10 years, and didn't ride much back then. I've recently been training for a long ride (180 miles in 2 days, rest a few days, then return). I started training around 3 months ago (I'd already been doing Stairmaster, treadmill, and weights for general health). So I'm counting 3 months ago as my "first ride."
1. 23.5 miles (with frequent stops)
2. 100 miles (stopping every 10 to 15 miles)
