Question Of Posture

I havent been on a bike in about 2 years, i'm really eager to get back into it but the weight I've gained isnt so excited. Actually, its my hands that seem to get most of the abuse and i cannot figure it out. Basically it seems as though when i bike, all my weight rests on my hands and wrists instead of my butt/legs/back. After about 20 minutes my hands are killing! My bike pro friend tested my bike and found that he experienced somewhat of what i'm talking about which leaves me wondering if its my posture or my bike. If anyone has any experience with this and can tell me how to adjust my bike or my body i would be SO grateful. Peace, Josh

first, slide your saddle forward on it's rails and see if that alleviates the situation. A picture of you riding would help a lot here as to whether its that or just needing to work on your core muscle group.

Is your saddle level? Even a few degrees of nose-down will put a lot of weight on your hands.

What kind of handlebars are you using? Sounds liked you need to raise them if possible. This will shift some weight to your butt and off your hands.

I had this problem - was counterintuitive, but sliding the saddle BACK and tilting the handlebars FORWARD actually helped. So did Ergon grips and gloves.

I was having the same problems and I went to the LBS to get a fit done. This seemed completely counterintuitive, but it helped when he slid my seat BACK all the way on the rails and gave me a LONGER stem. My only guess as to why that works is that it forces your core to support your body since it is nearly impossible for your hands to do all the work now.

From my experience, you should adjust your saddle position and stem length to the point where you are comfortably stretched out. That point will depend on your flexibility and some other factors. Find the point that makes you happy, and set your bike up to get you there. Make sure your saddle is level, not tilted forward.

BUT I am also convinced that you should raise your bars until they are at or near level with your saddle height. Doing so is definitely going to take some pressure off your hands. Raise those bars!

thanks everyone!! I have been playing around with saddle and bars but i'm starting to think i just need to get used to riding again. When you say slide the saddle BACK, you mean further from the bars or closer? my friend slid my saddle as close to my bars as possible, you thought that would help. but sliding the saddle closer to the bars effectively puts the seatpost at the BACK of the saddle rails, if you can see my confusion. thanks again!!

Ultimately I raised the handlebars up high enough (had to buy a longer stem) so I could hold my weight. Once I did that no wrist pain. I did a century and had a few roadies tell me they were surprised I did the century on a hybrid. I looked at them funny - I have a roadie! Asked them if they had enough energy to play frisbee afterwards, they declined. Go figure

Everyone body is different so what works for some may not work for others. That said, I changed to a 5" riser handlebar and it was like a complete different bike! No more pain in the palms.
