    Handle Bar Issue

So I purchased this used Trek 800 from Craigslist. Seems like its in great shape, rode it around the street today to try it out. There is this area on the handle bar that worries me. Its just right of the post the bars connect to. Its like treading and I am afraid its going to break, even though it seems strong.

    please help

Probably machine marks for grip. Pics would help though. Your handlebars may just be a couple of mm off center.
on light duty due to illness; please contact my assistants for forum issues. They are Siu Blue Wind, or CbadRider or the other 3 star folk. I am currently at home recovering from a couple of strokes. I am making good progress, happily.

Mine have been creaking for awhile. I tightened the *$%^ out of them and dropped a bit of chain oil in the creases, it seems to have helped. Double check the tightness and check the area with a magnifying glass for crack development.

The Trek 800 for many years has used a mild steel handle bar that does indeed have a knurled surface for clamping to the Stem. Your bar could be slightly off one side to the other. As long as it is clamped, this should not cause you a problem. It may have been manufactured wrong and this area is slightly wider than it should be. There should be no ill effects from this.
