My weakness

I have been battling my weight for years now. I eat much healthier now than I used to. We only eat out once every two weeks. But I have one HUGE weakness:

I just cannot seem to break myself from Cokes. I drink lots of water, at least 64 ounces everyday. I will go through periods when I don't drink them but then I'll have one and I'm instantly addicted again.

Anyone else have this weakness?

Mike

I used to have this addiction, as well as others. What worked for me was simply not buying these products when I was at the store. That at least cut out consumption at home. Cutting these products out while at work or school was a little more difficult, but usually just involved some extra planning to bring along some crystal light or something.

cokes I can do with out, now beer on the other hand. I just make sure to throw in some extra miles on the weekends to compensate.

It's dreadfully difficult to steer clear of my evening pint when I brew such tasty beer. It's the pitfall of being a homebrewer, I suppose.

I know how you feel, I'm like that with Pepsi, I lived on it for 20 years. I'd drink it first thing in the morning and all day and through the night, a 6 pack a day easy. I stopped drinking it around the 1st of the year and for weeks I had headaches and withdrawals, it really took like 2 months to get over it. Now, I see Pepsi at party or somewhere and I still struggle not to drink one. I swear it's like the freaking can is saying "Come here Bob....it's ok man....drink me".

I don't miss the bloated feeling you get after drinking a few.

I once figured that I downed an extra 2000 calories per week of Coke. I switched to diet Pepsi and have been trying to cut back on that, but it always gets me back.

I haven't craved a coke (diet or otherwise) in a while... one of the things I used to substitute for diet cokes as I was quitting them is spritzers: a SMALL amount of juice (about 1/4 cup for a 16 oz drink - about 30 calories) with club soda (fizzy - no calories, no artificial sweetener, just water and bubbles). Cranberry and grapefruit are my favorites

I have managed to kill my soda desires pretty good! I went from regular to diet about 2 years ago.. and lately trying to cut them out nearly 100%. What has worked GREAT for me is simply leaving the soda out, and letting it be warm. As I slowly have warmer and warmer soda it tastes worse and worse. Ive done it enough that really the idea of coke or pepsi doesnt give me the cold crisp refreshing cola taste, but I immediately think of the semi-gross, tasteless warm soda.

Not the most appealing thing in the world, but I dont drink soda anymore .

I heard somewhere that the sugar craving from soda is due to a combination of things. Low blood sugar due to the fact that caffeine lowers blood sugar while giving you a boost. Low calcium and possibly vitamin D as well. I just wish they would simply lower the sugar content. Also, I stay away from diet drinks. The amino acid sweetener is catabolized into Formaldehyde by your liver. Formaldehyde is used to preserve dead bodies and in plastics. Laboratory disection frogs are shipped and stored in Formaldehyde. I don't need preserving just yet!

I prefer Diet--I actually like it better than regular Coke, so at least the calories aren't a problem. But that has problems of its own. There are some brain abnormalities that seem to be associates with long-term consumption, and some really recent research seems to show that people who drink diet sodas have the same incidence of metabolic syndrome ("pre-diabetes" etc) as people who drink the real thing.
If you don't buy it and bring it home, then it won't be in the fridge when you get the craving. Drink a glass of ice water and wait 15 or 20 minutes, which is how long it takes most food cravings to pass. Out of the house...well, it runs you or you run it. Up to you.

Isn't it amazing that if you don't have something in the house, you don't eat it? :-) One trick, Joe, I use in the workplace is not to carry cash. I can't hit the vending machine without change or small bills.

When we are drawn to something in front of us, but do not crave it when we do not see it; it is probable that addictive behavior is at work, not a genuine hunger. I had a wake-up moment when a friend formerly involved way too much with drugs and alcohol made a few off-hand comments about addictive behavior. I did a Google search on "food addiction" and found 20 questions at this link. Reading them was a sobering experience. Since, I have decided to avoid eating anything unless there is actual hunger. The big test will come in a couple of weeks. I have to attend a board meeting. Candy dishes filled with some of my favorite things are always within easy reach of everyone.

Try Perrier' as a substitute. It tastes great and you will soon also think of it as a real treat too. Another drink I really like a lot is low sodium V-8 with a dash of worcestershire sauce and a dash of tobasco. Yet another great taste sensation that is also actually good for you.
