    Days off or bad diet?

    How many days do you usually take off between rides and or exercise? What happens if you donít stick to your regular diet during those days?

    I havenít taken more than 2 days in a row off in the last 3 months and today I felt why. I basically took the last 3 days off besides a 2 mile hike on Friday. We were entertaining family and friend from Friday-Sunday. I pretty much ate, drank, ate, partied and slept for three days. I did hit the booze Saturday, but no where near like I would have in the past.

    Today was a miserable ride. I felt like I just lost 2 months of training. Iím not sure if it was the days off, the food, the booze, or a combination, but Iíve never felt this crappy before. I had SERIOUS lactic acid build up and fast. Iíve never had to actually stop pedaling before. Iím well hydrated and eating normal again. Any chance it was something I ate? Are there any foods the cause an excess of lactic acid in the muscles? Or am I just a wimp and need to stop whining and ride more?

    I'm not the guy to ask about cycling, but I do everything I can to exercise daily. I've not missed a day in quite sometime. My gym opens at 5am but if for some reason I at least try to get out for a walk or something. I peaked in April at 288# and I'm down to 237# as of saturday, if I don't exercise I feel like crap the whole day until I get something in.

    3 days off the bike undoes a week of training, a week undoes 2 weeks and a 2 week off period undoes 3 months.
    on light duty due to illness; please contact my assistants for forum issues. They are Siu Blue Wind, or CbadRider or the other 3 star folk. I am currently at home recovering from a couple of strokes. I am making good progress, happily.

    I had to be off the bike for a week due to travel for work, and when I came back I felt like I could bike like a madman.

    Just my experience, but your physiology is different than mine.....I'm an old middle aged fart and have some prior health issues that affect how fast my physical condition declines without exercise.

    Matter of fact all of us have differences in physiology.

    Oh ok cool. I just thought I was missing something everyone already knew. Everyone is surely different in their cycling efforts. I seem to have more of a problem where if I don't ride for a while, my mentality changes...have to bike almost everyday otherwise, I get into lazy mode. (less physical decline, more mind related)

    I disagree. I think it was the drinking. Dehydration and liver after effects really do make you feel like crap, and for good eason. You may think you're well hydrated, but after three days of drinking and partying, I really doubt that you are. 3 days off the bike does not hurt me at all, and neither does a week, so long as I take up where I left off.
    It's all downhill from here. Except the parts that are uphill.

    I only drank booze one of the three days and that was saturday. But I agree that it still had an effect. This was the first time I've really consumed any amount of alcohol in months.

    Two days off the bike has never affected me before, but this time I went three. I'm just trying to figure out if it was the third day that killed me or some thing I ate that I might not normally eat or the alchohol, etc. I'd like to figure it out so I can avoid this in the future.

    I also had a rough ride yesterday, after 4 forced days off (bike in the shop - it's finally back, was the bottom bracket. you were all correct). I was only able to go 6 miles, even though I'd planned on repeating the 12 mile route. I was riding 1-2 gears lower than normal, and after every hill, even little ones, I had to stop - felt like I was going to puke. After 3 miles, started feeling headachy, so decided to turn back. Got home and just sat on the floor feeling sick for about 20 minutes, but was OK after a cool shower and food.

    I don't know if it was the time off that did it, or a change in diet (I also dropped calories 500 lower, about 5 days ago). I think I was hydrated - was sweating profusely and drinking a lot.

    I'd like to figure it out too.

    I had one ride that ended like that and it was certainly dehydration for me.

    My guess is the change in diet and the heat. Also, pardon my saying so, you aren't in the best physical shape to begin with - and neither am I. Lance Armstrong taking four days off is different than you or I.

    BTW, I'm back on the bike for the first time since Thursday. I'm commuting today in 95 degree weather. Wish me luck!

    Dehydration can be killer though. Especially since it's been about a billion degrees for the past week or so.

    Could be a combination of many things including the calorie drop, dehydration, possibly hotter, and the break. The only reliable way I've found to judge whether I'm staying hydrated enough is to look at the color of my pee, and be aware of the frequency, before and after exercising. If it's yellow, instead of fairly clear, or I'm not having to go very often, I know I'm not getting enough water.

    Alcohol, food, you name it. Both of those have direct impacts on my cycling abilities even days after I've consumed them. A steady consistent diet lacking "pollutants" is a good way to ensure consistent biking ability. Oh, and days off. DEFINITELY days off.

    For me, days off don't affect me a lot. Today was my first day on the bike since Thursday, and I was rockin'. Felt great, speed was great, etc etc. YMMV, but generally that's how I work. I'd think it's likely more the intake during that period than anything else.

    Yea man honestly i believe it is the diet.. booze, pizza etc... Taking DAys off actually is not a bad thing. It gives your body time to rest and recover which is a really important part of training.. Now taking two weeks off?? yea you will lose some ground. But i promise a 3 day break won't do you much harm and it might even help.. So yea its the diet...

    Yep I'm with you. I probably drank 8-10 beers and 3 bloody marys on Saturday. Friday and Sunday I didn't drink any alcohol, but I did drink pop, and a lot of milk which I haven't drank a lot of in the last 3 months.

    Yes, it was hot. But four days off the bike helped me cut 4 minutes off my time. I felt like I was jet powered.

    Amen. I've read that the general rule of thumb is if you train solid for 4 weeks (and when I say solid, 5-6 days/week) that you take the 5th week off. I did that earlier this summer and I felt awesome when I came back. Now, the sit bones were a bit tender, but that only lasted about 2 rides.

    You have to give your body time to rest and rebuild itself.
