Hey guys, just needed to post this because I want input plus I need to vent...ok so I am looking to buy new cycling clothes and I can find them in a size that will fit my gut anyways how do you guys deal with getting clothing to fit you and then when you lose weight and they are way to big? I do not want to go out and spend lots o money on cycling clothes and then in 4 months (since I plan on training hard and want to loose lots of weight) and then have to buy a bunch more because the ones I bought are alot bigger.....

I could also suggest keeping your eyes open in the marketplace, from time to time, jerseys pop up there used....that's ALL I'd buy used though, I don't want someones old cycling shorts! Kind of like used underwear, don't ya know

Look for last years styles or even styles from two or three years ago. If you find them they usually run ya 1/3 the price of the new stuff.

Cyling clothes are meant to be washed and washed without loosing too much of their original integrity and appearance. No need to go out and buy lots of new duds to fit your current girth, just buy a few things, wash them frequently and look forward to the smaller sizes.

I would just get one outfit for now, a little bit on the tight side. You can handwash it in the shower after every ride, hang it, and it will be dry the next day. When it doesn't work for you anymore, pack it up and ship it off to some other clyde in need.

I'd shop velowear.com / Voler. You can order some different items and sizes and then return what you don't want. Voler's pricing is very reasonable and they make it easy to return stuff by including a return envelope with every order.

I went through 3 short sizes in 7 months when I started riding. It one of those things, if you want to ride comfortably, your going to need to spend some money on shorts and jerseys. Now you could learn to build your own, been trying to convince my wife to make some jerseys for me, and I think she going to give it a try once I decided on a material supplier. You can also hit up some of the manufacturers that will make you custom stuff.

I used www.coldlizard.com and they do not charge for custom size jerseys. Give them a jingle and they will tell you what you need to do. I got a long sleeve tokay jersey from them last year and I use it as a jacket when the temps get into the low 50's and upper 40's. Keeps me nice and warm, I forgot to ask them to put pockets on it, but she told me to send it back to them and they would if I wanted it.

Try "club cut" jerseys. Standard jerseys are made for people with 9% body fat. The club cut is looser around the middle.

Walmart for shirts and shorts. I shopped the sales at Sports Authority for my tights. I probably have at most $50 into a cold days clothes, $25 in the warm summer. I hand wash mine every night and hang in front of a fan to dry. Not that they need to be hand washed, it just saves energy and water instead of running the washer and dryer.

I bought everything tight. I've lost just about enough weight to go a any buy the next size down because everything is starting to get lose.

I know how you feel. Having loved my XXL Oakley Alloy 2.6 shorts, I tried a pair of Oakley Ballistic 2.6 shorts in the same size. I rode in them one time - a really nice late night ride in the rain. I put them on a little while ago, and they were about to fall off. There's no elastic in the waist, and no belt loops, so that's about it for them. I've only had them since last week, so I might be able to exchange them for an XL pair.

That said, I have a hard time being angry at having to buy clothes for progress toward my goal. The alternative is much worse.

And buy sizes on the smaller size when there's a choice. What can mess you up is that some jerseys are "club" fit, or American vanity sizes. They read about one size smaller on the tag than a racing fit or European sized jersey. Many jerseys will specify "club" fit. If not, call before ordering online if there's any questions.

Buying the smallest you can wear now will give you incentive to keep losing. Good luck!

I very well may come winter. I'm not quite ready to sport the spandex as an outer layer, and it'll start getting cold soon. I may buy some inexpensive lycra shorts and wear them with my jeans. As much as I like baggy cycling shorts, I'm really disappointed in the availability of baggy winter options. Part of me hopes that a jacket and shorts is enough.

I recently got a new MTB, that I plan on riding on the trails around here with, and on the road. I'm not sure what gear to buy? Thats why I was curious, I'm not comfortable wearing skin tight clothes, so I figured I'd get biking shorts and wear regular shorts over them, not sure about a shirt tho.

One the bottom I mostly wear a pair of wicking work out shorts over the top. They aren't skin tight, but you don't want them baggy. Some times I just wear my tights on the bottom. On the top I alway cover the spare tire up with a shirt. But again it should be a wicking exercise shirt and shouldn't be really baggy. What ever you do don't wear anything cotton if you sweat at all. Wicking materials are your friend.
