Well, winters here and it's time to start wearing something on my legs. But what?

I've got some cycling tights but really don't like them, I'm not really a skin tight type of guy. I usually wear cycling bibs with shorts over the top.

I've been using track suit trousers but being large of girth and short of legs, they are generally too long and flap about a bit, I've got some things that wrap around my ankle to keep them out of the chain but there must be a better solution.

So, I wondered what people wear on their legs?

I wear cycling tights over my Pearl Izumi bicycling shorts. If it gets too cold then I wear another layer of sweat pants that have elastic in the ankle. It is usually my arms that get cold and not my legs.

I wear tights with a pair of loser shorts over the top.

Sometimes knee warmers. I don't remember the brand but the ones from Boure look nice.

Also, wear tights from LLBean. They are cut close enough so that they don't flap in the wind or interfere with cycling. At least you won't look like a reject for Cirque du Soleil.

I just wear running tights over my Knicks. Nike runners tights are cheaper than cycling tights and do the same job

I like the idea of looser fitting tights, like the ones I saw on the LLbean site.
I just had a quick look on a UK site that does both cycling and running and the price is the same for the basic loose fitting tights.
But they have some water repellent ones that look pretty cool for the cold rainy UK winter.

I think I might go down that route.

Depends on the degree of cold and length of ride. When I was in CA and had a longish (30 min) commute in the early morning (430A) it was chilly in the winter, and I used a pair of REI fleece sweatpants. They worked great because they were lose in the butt/thigh area, but tapered around my lower legs so I never had a problem with the chain. In Baltimore I have a colder but short (10 min) commute, and short of it getting REALLY cold I'm sticking to either work clothes (slacks) or MTB shorts and sasquatch legs to keep me warm.

They are the same thing, so I just find the cheaper price. I found them for under $30.00 so I bought them from a bicycle place.

Tights sounds soooo sissy. I prefer to call them compression pants, that way I don't feel so self concious. :-)

And for gods sake, don't shave those legs!!!!

depends on the temp.

moderate temp (50- 60) - usually bibbed tights.
cool (40 - 50) - tights with a base layer underneath, the base layer are nylon thermals
cold (30 - 40) - tights with wind pants
really cold (below 30) - I just add layers, when it gets really cold it usually ends up being a
nylon thermal, with tights with wind pants. with the thermals and wind pants over the tights I can usually
ride into the mid to low teens.

I wear a wind suit from Wally World. All you need is something to break the wind and the min. amount of clothes underneath it. On cold days I will wear long johns under them. The wind pants are slightly baggy but have the elastic at the ancles and I have never had a problem with them in the chain.

Well...in the early 1980s many of the guys that I used to ride with actually wore thick, winter-weight pantyhose to ride, when the temperature was just above freezing. They were also popular back then with American football players...

not cheap, but worth every penny - one pair will do you - mine is going on it's third year of cold weather commuting. Legs zip off into shorts too...for those days when it warms up in the afternoons.

Ron Hill tracksters or bikesters have the right amount of insulation and windproofing for most winter riding. Check out your local Millets.

Funny I was thinking "I'm Fat! My legs don't get cold!" And sadly they seldom do. For me to worry about somethng on my legs it has ot be literally freezing outside. In that type of weather cycling tights are best (no shorts underneath - just the tights). Also remember booties for your feet!

I surfed and dove when I was growing up and if the water and air temp got low enough for me to wear a full body wet suit, I would wear them under the wet suit. Don't knock it until you've tried it. Women don't complain about how hot they are for nothing.

I'm still trying to figure out what to wear. I have some nylon shell sweat pants that work well for cutting the wind, but it really has been cold enough. Plus, I don't have the advantage like some of you do, of tucking my sweat pants into a home monitoring anklet like some of you wear.

Have you tried the running/cycling tights? Basically spandex pants.

They are good at keeping you warm. UnderArmor gear is basically the same type of thing. You can get a similar product at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc....... Are you near any sporting goods stores? Go there and ask about gear to keep your legs warm.
