What's the weather like where you are?

How grim does the weather have to be to put you off going out on your bikes?

Being new to this game, I have to confess that a gusty wind and the sight of black clouds looming makes it tempting to stay indoors with my hubby and the cats, in front of the fire!!

I'm still keen to be able to post an "after" photo in my blog come spring time, so looking for inspiration to get us out there more regularly...

Too much cake? Do they have Ben and Jerry's Icecream over there?

I don't mind any of the weather except the rain. I like riding in the rain but hate damaging the gear, bearings, wheels, grit in the drivetrain etc.

ps duplicate post, just realised the title of the previous one made it look like a daft post just about the weather!!
Thunderstorms will do it, sustained wind in excess of 40km/h will do it, and roads chemically treated to remove ice and snow will do it, as the chemicals also encourage metal corrosion. Pretty much anything else is game....

I have found that you can ALWAYS find a good reason for not exercising. If you're going to get any exercise, you just have to go ahead and do it anyway.

(For my wife, it's too hot or too cold or too windy or too humid or too sunny or too dark, etc)

It's almost always too 'something' up here. Too cold, too rainy, too humid, pollen/mold count is too high, etc. During the week, I don't have much problem with motivation because I like my job and I like riding my bike so riding to work is a good combo. On the weekend if the weather sucks, I'll stay inside. With a stationary 'bent in front of the TV, I can play video games or watch movies and still put in 50+ miles. (Plus, my dog has figured out that if she hands me a toy while I'm riding the 'bent I'll throw it for her to fetch; rather than her previous endeavor of dropping it in front of the bike and getting clonked in the butt with a pedal when she tried to lay down and gnaw on it.)

Hmmm, I don't have a cat avatar, am I permitted to post to this thread? Perhaps the op will make an allowance based on my handle?

The only way I can maintain some level of riding through the winter is by riding inside. I also don't like strong winds, rain, ice, snow, or extreme cold. While I have fond memories of snow skiing in -20 F weather, at my age, living in the south has spoiled me and the freezing point is about the cutoff where I'll go out. Instead, one of my bikes has now made its way indoors on a trainer. I have it set up in front of a TV and there is a fan that helps keep me cool. When I don't feel like braving the elements I hop on the bike for a half hour or so.

I touched a cat once so I guess I can post!
It's easy for me! I don't have a car, so if I want to eat etc. I have to run "errands"!
I do try to ride during the rain breaks/less severe wind.
I also made some fenders for my bike that get installed in the Fall.
I probably hate wind as much as I do the rain. I just gear down and accept the fact I can't do a thing about it! Kind of like doing "penance". Maybe I'll be rewarded.......

I'm in Utah, and it gets pretty cold and snowy here. I don't have a ton of experience biking in bad weather, but I agree with the idea that there's always an excuse to not go. Whenever I do bike in bad weather, provided I'm dressed appropriately, I always feel good afterwards. Get yourself a nice jacket and some full finger gloves (my legs don't really get cold, but you can get some tights too). As long as you don't get sick, you'll never regret getting out there on your bike.

Here in Indiana, it's been a bit windy and cool, and we had a wee little bit of snow. Nothing that would have kept me from riding though
on light duty due to illness; please contact my assistants for forum issues. They are Siu Blue Wind, or CbadRider or the other 3 star folk. I am currently at home recovering from a couple of strokes. I am making good progress, happily.

+0-4 degrees Celsius, 8-10 knots wind, rain or snow most of the time and below freezing in the nights. Time to put on studded tires soon. Haven't been riding much(no mudguards on my mountainbike) but walking quite a bit and a couple of 3-mile runs. When the slush turns to ice and snow I'll go out more.

Edit: you can check my weather situation here

All advice aside, considering I need more than anyone:

Here in Provo, UT, it's hasn't been above 60 in about a month, but it's been near 60 lately. It's been sunny, and perfect for biking. Let's hope it stays that way.

My (weather) criteria for not riding:
Rain or storms in the vicinity.
    Wind above 15mph.
Temperature below 50 degrees (I have no cold weather gear-I ride in shorts and a shirt).

well it's 57 at 8:40 pm, I getting ready to roll out about 9 pm. Have my tights and long sleeve jersey on, but it's a beautiful night for a ride. Suppose to be real nice tomorrow, but my youngest son is turning 14, so will be doing stuff he wants to do. I'm trying to convince him he wants to go riding, but he can't keep up the old old fat guy in his cycling shorts any longer. hahahahahahahahaha
