We got hit pretty hard here in Utah too. I think we got about a foot. Good luck with the riding. Or, maybe this storm will help you recover a little bit more before you get back out there on the bike.

We got about 8-10 inches the first hit here in R.I. All the schools let the students out about 1:00 pm and all the bussinesses closed too. That created a traffic rush hour just as the storm hit and dumped 1.5 inches an hour for a while.
All the cars got stuck on the roads. Cars were running out of gas, people were abandoning vehicles and they were having accidents on the highway. Just exactly like happened in1978. People died in that storm in stuck cars. They knew exactly when this storm was coming, and how fast the snow would fall the day before the storm. No one did anything.

This meant the showplows could do nothing as the road was filled with cars. 15 minute commutes turned into 6 hours or more. There were about 60 school buses stuck out for hours.

Threre were elementary school kids stuck on buses for nine hours with no food or bathrooms. The reason they got home in nine hours was the police cars went to the busses and took the kids home.

Now round two, a few inches of ice on everything but no rush hour traffic. Monday morning is going to be inches of ice on everything.

It amazes me how some places are so poorly prepared to handle snow. I've never experienced anything like that in the 15 years I've lived in Utah, or the two years I lived in Montreal, and those are both pretty snowy places. I remember in junior high we got about 2.5 feet in one night, and school started as normal the next day.

This has happend twice in the last 56 years. If it was at night we would have been all set by morning too. But the snow fell fast so that cars starting a dry trip at noon had 12' of snow on them very quickly. The cars blocked the snow plows. It is pretty bad planning. If they said to stay home the day before most people would have gone to work anyway. If everyone was released at say 9:00 am it would be better. Rush hour is at least three hours. They actually knew the storm was going to start early afternoon.

All the predictions were exactly right! All the media warned us! Maybe there should have been plowing at the start of the storm at 1:30-2:00 pm and kept everyone off the road until evening. That would have worked. But who would stay at work? I think most people would not listen.

My family planned ahead we knew one of my kids would be snowed in at her hospital job. She brought her dog over here for the night, I filled the car gas tank, etc. It was very easy to plan ahead. Why didn't everyone? No one seems to plan ahead anymore.

I have a scanner monitoring local transit, and they are having loads of fun, buses and streetcars stuck everywhere, snowplows on major streets causing them more grief, subway seems to be unaffected, my SO just called, shes walking the 3km from the nearest subway station, because she can't trust the buses running. In bad weather feet usually have the best chance of getting
through.....

Man...I cannot utilize text messages to convey to you people how sad these photos make me. I miss home so much (upstate NY--Syracuse/Rochester/Watertown--all heavy snow areas!).

Sure, I get year-'round riding out here in SoCal, but, there's just something about a winter snow storm socking it to you. It slows down the pace of life and makes you appreciate everything more. I just love it.

When I'm done with my Master's degree, I'm definitely going to look to returning.

And I'm looking forward to more reasonable climates when I'm done with my schooling I've spent time enough of my life in snow country, having worked the North Slope of AK and other arctic climes. I really prefer the tropics or warm temperate regions.

I can't imagine I'd miss the snowstorms if I ever had the chance to move to a warmer climate. I hate this stuff.

Well Tom, it looks pretty much the same around my house, but being as how my house is only about 60 miles due East of yours, it's no big surprise... I have to go back out in about an hour and pic my wife up from work in the Jeep... I was watching the news out of Indy tonight and they said by late this next week most if not all of this snow will be melted... But, then we have flooding to look forward to. Oh well, it's Indiana...

The only thing I don't like about snow is driving in it, since we don't have a car this winter, I'm not driving in it, so I don't mind it anywhere as much, in fact I was out taking pictures in it

I really admire the Toronto Transit Commission folks today though, I have a radio scanner, and keep it on TTC supervisor frequencies, and it has not been a good day for them, the fact they have been able to keep the system going, albeit not on schedule, is a monument to the dedicated folks we have at the TTC. The amazing thing I find, is cars fouling the streetcar tracks, this is when a car is parked, so that streetcars can not pass, they call the police who get it towed, but still, it means a supervisor and constable need to attend, it slows things down when it shouldn't.

Fortunately for me, I didn't need to go anywhere I could not walk to, so it was a snow day
