Help ME!

Over the past few weeks now I have not been able to eat, at all. I have barely been managing to consume 800 calories per day. Everytime I try to eat more I just can't get it down, it makes me want to gag. Or it will upset my stomach and I will vomit. I know this is so bad for you, but I jsut can't keep food down since Jan1 I have eaten 19,000 calories, I am a note taker.

Any Idea on how to keep food down. Or advice on whether this is bad and how bad it is.

I am still drinking about 3L of water every day.

solveg 01-25-08 12:08 AM

You gotta suck it up and see a doctor. You want to be sure nothing is going wrong. It could be a simple answer, but you need to know what it is. Keep us posted, OK?

What's nice is that you've kept careful notes. That will be very helpful.

I think I will sometime next week (going to NY this weekend). The weird thing is though, I am never hungry, when I am hungry I can eat. But I just never seem to be hungry. Or like once a day, around 3 Oclock. But the thing is, its not like I am sitting on my ass either, I have rugby practice 3 hours a day 4 times a week. And am up to doing 8 miles runs daily and 12-14 mile runs on the weekend. Along with cycling for about an hour a day on my trainer.

Strange. Is this brand new behavior? Do you gag when you first eat (while the food is in your throat), or once it gets to your stomach?

You need to seek medical attention if you cannot regain control of your eating. It may not hurt you early on, but your internal organs will be damaged if you don't get proper nourishment.

Air 01-25-08 05:57 AM

Doctor. Were you trying to lose weight and not eat as much? Could actually be the beginnings of anorexia. Could also be the beginnings of throat cancer. Wide range there - talk to someone who's got more information in front of them besides Google ;)

Let me chime in as well.......
SEE A DOCTOR! In my opinion, this is very, very important! If you have this relatively new presentation of symptoms, there are too many possible causes, and some are minor, but others are very much an issue that your doctor needs to address.

I would have to agree with Tom. See a DOCTOR.

I can't believe you are a clyde, with the amount of things you do. DANG!!!!

Forget NY. See A Doctor Today.

solveg 01-25-08 07:08 AM

You're about 17 years old, right?

I know you're busy, and probably doing a lot after school, but you should pop into urgent care today/tonight so you get to the doctor before you go to NY.

Why? Because if you're not eating and working out a ton, you can get heart abnormalities. Here in MN, we've had kids just drop dead during games because they had an undiagnosed issue. Add in the stress of heavy workouts and combine that with not eating...it's not something to play around with.

Plus, your body may need to be reintroduced to food in certain manner. The doctor can make sure you're getting the right nutrients and electrolytes during that process.

Don't screw around with this. If you're going to push your body, you have to be responsible enough to take care of it.

-ok?

Report back.

My fiancee was having a similar problem keeping food down sometimes. She'd eat, and then a minute later she'd get sick and throw up. When she went in for other laparoscopic surgery, they found she had a minor hiatal hernia.

bautieri 01-25-08 08:18 AM

Cole,

Your going to crash and crash hard. Besides the lack of nutrients, take a wild stab at where your body is getting its protein. Yep, your muscles that you worked so hard to develop and tone. As of today your body has been without food for 15.5 days. 19,000 calories is enough for 9.5 days at 2k a day. It's now the 25th.

Does it matter what you eat? If your keeping down 3l of water a day maybe you should try some liquid type foods. If you cant get to the doctors immediately at least get yourself to your local GNC and buy this. You stomach is likely sensitive so only use a 3rd of the dose you should. If it stays down you'll get a big shot of protein, carbs, fiber, fats, and a whole boatload of vitamins. Warning, the chocolate flavor tastes horrible, vanilla is the best in my opinion, avoid strawberry and other fruit flavors like the plague at least for weight gainers.

Do not take what I have just told you as an excuse not to get medical attention. I sincerely hope the weight gainer will stay down and work for you, but you need to see a doctor.

See a doctor. Memory says your in cali... I know a guy who makes coffins out that way...

No food + much workout = low/no potassium/sodium/calcium = no heart pumping = no pulse/blood pressure = DEAD

and all off those low electrolyte conditions COULD cause you to have difficulty eating making the condition worse.

GO SEE A DOCTOR

Dude,

I'm a nursing student. Count the eight years of training like an athelete in the USMC and I think I have some experience.... GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR! Not eating CAN KILL YOU!!! Especially if you are training this hard... It might be nothing... but it might be something... GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!

Today I am going to try a new technique on eating, just eating small bits and small meals like 6 times a day. It seems to work well, so far I have eaten two apples, a mango, one of my protein shakes and some oatmeal. And I am making a piece of toast right now. I think I might just have to retrain my body on when I should, maybe its just gotten used to not having a ton of food and works very efficiently with the nutrients its getting. I am also a vegetarian, so I get most of my protein from shakes.

I am also still technically a clyde because I am 6'4, but I am down at around 175-180.

You need to go see a doctor. Part of being an athlete is to listen to your body and to train smart.

Do me a favor. The nurse line of your insurance is free. Just call and ask them. You asked for our advice and now you have us worried. I'll even get you the number if you tell me who your provider is.

I am heading into the doctor later this afternoon, after school. I will keep you all posted.

Good for you. Incidentally, 6 foot 4 and 175 pounds is extremely unhealthy, especially for someone who hasn't finished growing yet.

As for the appetite disappearing, that happens in cases of starvation. Which is what you are doing to yourself.

incorrect. 6'4" 175 is not unhealthy. what, he has to be fat to be healthy ?

you need 'all' the information before you can say that.

You may wish to consult a weight chart and rethink that. At 175 he's less than the recommend weight. Plus, he's 16. He's not done growing yet. If he'd 'topped out', that would be one thing, but he might grow a bit more.

flip18436572 01-25-08 10:28 AM

175 at 6'4" is not unhealthy, unless he is skin and bone at 175.

Even using the Generic BMI charting that is a 21 BMI. At 6'3" to be out of the overweight and into normal, I have to be under 195 according to the BMI. I would have to be at 152 to be in the underweight catagory.

.Cole 01-25-08 10:30 AM

I am definetly not skin and bones. Lots of muscle with a wee bit of fat.

But for a growing boy?

.Cole 01-25-08 10:43 AM

I am not supposed to grow anymore, infact I haven't gotten any taller since I was about 12.
