So I've entered the Sea Otter Classic in the Beginner Clydesdales Mountain XC category (yes it's a real category! ) This is going to be my first race ever. The bike's set up and I'm riding as much as I can up until the event. Any suggestions from Clydesdales who have raced competitively? Anything helps!

I have participated in numerous races, I don't know if you can call it racing competitively, as I have a hard time finding races with Clydesdale classes to enter.

My advice: don't get to excited and go out too fast- find your speed and go with that. Save some for the final push to finish, its far easier to make up some time/speed than it is to try to finish after you have bonked.

If you can preride the course at all, do so. The closer to the actual event, the better.

But since this is your first race, have fun and use it as a learning experience. You will learn a lot about how racing works and how you work in those conditions. Pay attention as this racing stuff is addicting and you'll probably want to do it again.

Preride is impossible, as I don't live anywhere close to Monterey. This biker does not plan on losing!!
I checked up on the course and watched a yuutube video of someone running the majority of it. Doesn't look like a big challenge in terms of climbs, plenty of nice flowing XC trails. Can't wait!!!

thats great i just entered a race at the end of may, how long is yours? did you debate different catagories?

The XC race is 1 lap at 10 miles around Monterey, CA. Roadie racing really isn't my thing, so it had to be mountain cross country. The clydesdale category was a no brainer though, considering I'm over 250lbs I need to keep my stumpjumper in good condition for the race, so it's in the garage in favor of training on a singlespeed rockhopper around town.
