What the best way

Hello, just joined the forum an i was happy to see you had aa subforum for larger bicycle riders.
So, I am 17 and 16/17 stone and i need to loose it, I am always going to be a big lad and so bieng stick thin is something i am not going to be and don't want to be either so i just wan't to tone up and loose that excess fat. In beetween going to the Gym I want to go out on my bike and loose some whieght that way. So whats the best way to go about this, i already use my bike daily to commute but I want to get out for longer to really improve my fitness and stamina, so can anyone suggest any exercise regimes that I can follow that wont get in the way of my college work.
thanks for any help. Ginge.

Ride daily for about 2 hours. But not grandma style, put at least some effort in and watch your calorie intake. That's pretty much all the advise I can give you.

Yup. Eat less, exercises more.

Also, you said you want it to not get in the way of your college work. That's great, and it shouldn't, but be careful of the tendency that so many sedentary folks have of saying they don't have enough time to exercise. I don't even go there anymore when one of these people says to me, "Oh yeah, you do all that stuff, heh, I don't have time for that." Here among us, though, I'll say that I think most people have plenty of time to exercise -- they're just choosing to do something else instead. Also, it's often not a conscious choice, or a use of time that they're aware of. But if they really timed what they did and then looked back on it at the end of the day, they'd probably be appalled. "I spent how long watching television? And how long playing video games, or idly surfing the web?" When you really look at your use of time, you might be surprised at where some of it goes. Then at that point it's up to you to make the choice about what you value more. If you really want that daily hour playing video games, okay, but that's an hour you won't be able to use for something else. Your choice, your consequences.

First of, welcome:)
sorry it's been a while since i learned the conversion to stone, you're abouot 225-240 lbs? just curious more than anything.
how much are you looking to lose, it'll be helpful to know your goals on the bike and in general? if you're looking to lose any weight make sure you're not just training hard, but training smart(god i hate that term but i can't think of a better way to say it.) there are various ways and theories that generally revolve around varying intesities. You can go out and ride as hard as you can, but if you're doing it improperly it isn't going to help in any way whether it be weight loss or otherwise. i'll see if i can find some links but i'm sure there is information already on here about it if you search(i'm actually positive that there is) when i get more time at work i'll see if i can go through some threads and pull out ones with useful advice for you. there are a lot of great internet resources, as well as books at the library/local bookstore(preferably one like barnes and noble where they don't care if you actually buy the book and they allow you to just hang out and read).
i have a couple books at home, but i'm not sure they'll be overly helpful with this, i'll check it out and post whatever info i find(if any)

and to agree with lil brown bat, i can't say that i've ever met a person that didn't have the time to excersise for atleast a few hours during the week. and again if you're training properly you can get a better workout in a 1/2 hour than somone improperly training for 2+ hours.

and i also completely agree with scummer, it's simple, take in less calories or burn more caleries(or both) and you'll lose weight, of course assuming that you don't suffer from a genetic issue or thyroid problem or anything like that.

also, this part is for everyone looking to lose weight, men's health has a great program on their site called "belly off" or something to that effect, great tips for eating and a lot of videos instructing on various excersises. i knew there program was for me when i read the first line of the description that went something like "we know you aren't going stop eating pizza and burritos and drinking beer, but here's how to do it sensibly" it was something like that. a buddy of mine lost about 70 lbs now on that program and i'm down about 20 since january. they also have a section that gives advice for what to order if you have to get fast food, and no i'm not talking about getting a salad.

Buy a cheap heart rate monitor with a chest strap (not the finger or wrist pulse rate ones) that has a user controlled exercise zone, i..e, you can set the high and low bpm manually.

Read up on how to use it - I found this book very helpful

Then get out there and enjoy.

If it wasn't for google I wouldn't know anything

Infact I'm sure I don't even bother to remember stuff anymore because I know I can find it out again really quickly. Google is making my brain shrink.

Thanks for the advice I really appreciate it. Its a lot to take in so I will have a good luck through and probably return with more questions.:p
