    Please help motivate me to get back on...

    the bike.

    I stopped riding a few years ago and desparately want to get going again but am having difficulty with my own motivation. I am 52 years old, 6'3", 250. In the past I have ridden 9 centuries plus many, many shorter rides ranging from 20 miles to 75 miles. All at 235 +. Somehow never managed to get my weight any lower.

    I live in Seattle, WA and the weather is finally improving.

    I guess my question to all of you other Clydesdales is, what keeps you motivated? What got you on the bike and keeps you there?

    Thanks for any input you may have.

    Just do a small ride. Ride when u can. The more you ride the more you will want to ride. Join a bike club ride with others. Have fun!

    Just hop on and take leisurely rides. You don't have to set any records.
    Slow & smell the roses. Take streets you don't normally use to get a different view of things. Add variety, so the trip is enjoyable. Enjoy the "ME" time.

    I have ridden nearly 9,000 miles in the past 2.5 years without any weight loss. So I keep telling myself, I ride merely for the enjoyment and health benefits. I'm hoping that riding will deter diabetes and heart disease if nothing else. Get out there and enjoy the ride.

    No one can motivate another. Is not the 250 lbs enough cause? If not, you read our threads about the fun of get about under your own power. Sun and the fresh air cycling gives us. All the evidence is before you. Its up to you. If you don't find that addictive, there is little an outsider can do.

    Dude, you gotta motivate yourself. If you want it, you'll do it, if not, go sit on the couch, watch ESPN and stuff yourself with pretzels and beer.

    FYI, I am 6'1", 240lbs, 49 in Sept and fixing to step out the door in a few minutes to participate in my first bicycle race in 30 some years! Am I gonna get shelled...probably. I'm using racing as motivation to help me quit smoking (1 full week smokeless so far) and drop some pounds (250 3 weeks ago).

    Problems come our way of all sorts. Here, we have five days of rain to cope with. I hate wet cyclists feet and the inside clamminess of rain gear. After five days off the bike , I'll be a little nuts.

    Cyclezealot Well you may not have lost anyweight but think or what you would be like wiout those 9000 miles. I dont cycle enough to loose weight by cycleing alone. But i find that riding my bike to my dojo helps dramtically.

    Sparring is a HUGE motivator for eating right. Sure have that beer on a weekend but you have to fight thrusday night so keep that in mind when you are getting hit and you are too tired to block.

    But that is just me.

    think how much worse your arteries would look without those 9000 miles. An easy solution. Wise eating is a part of the solution. Crisp apples are as tasty as chocolate cake. Keep telling yourself that!.

    You may have physical issues that make the bikes you used to ride no longer comfortable, so your lack of motivation might be your body protesting your choice of bike.

    Consider getting a recumbent or crank-forward bike - ask in the recumbent forum about these.

    Because, to me bicycling is FUN!

    If it isn't fun, find something else to do that is fun. Or, figure out a way to make bicycling FUN! Perhaps you are setting too high of expectations for yourself. I.e., centuries, etc. Instead, go for a 10 mile ride along a stream or lake or whatever. Stop and smell the roses. Take some pictures. Have a great tasting Washington apple. Return. Smile.

    I also swim and walk and lift weights because they are FUN!

    No one will keep at any exercise program for very long if it isn't fun or if there is not some satisfaction to doing it.

    As far as the weight goes, I don't worry about it any more. I am 218 lbs (6 feet) and most of it is muscle, and the rest I live with.

    I got tired of weight watchers and all of that. My BP this am was 108/74, my last cholesterol was 183, and I am 68 years old.

    on light duty due to illness; please contact my assistants for forum issues. They are Siu Blue Wind, or CbadRider or the other 3 star folk. I am currently at home recovering from a couple of strokes. I am making good progress, happily.

    35 years ago Consumer reports said bikes of a certain quality were a pleasure to ride. Get a good bike and you'll find lots of excuses to ride.

    Test ride a Specialized Sequoia. There's lots of good bikes out there, but that's a good place to start.

    I was riding a Schwinn back in the day. The Schwinn family has a company called Gunnar and that's what I ride today. It's a joy to ride. First time I gave it a test ride, I couldn't stop smiling.

    I had bariatric surgery to get it started. I pretty much had to, since exercise was pretty much out....

    I could only walk about 50 feet before I had serious chest pain. I went from that to riding 167 miles in a day last Labor Day....I'm 3 years, 2 months from that picture right now.

    good for you! I started my journey into weight loss last year,from 420 to 300-310. i m watching what i eat and exercising. my motivation was at the doctors last year,he told me if i didnt do something, i,d be a dead man in a year!that got me going! i started walking, got up to 5 miles .that got boring as did a treadmill,so im getting into biking. one of my friends had the bypass.he was 480,that was a year ago, he,s now 275.it was rough for him.well good work and keep it up! and thanks for your help!

    Good job! It appears you are doing quite well then. If you can manage it without surgical intervention, that's always the best.

    i lost almost 40 lbs in a couple of months. weight lost wasn't my goal. i started exercising and watching my carb intake for medical reasons. here's what i found.....i didn't limit carbs.....i just tried to make sure that, when i ate carbs, i was getting the most bang for my buck....also, i spaced them out equally throughout the day. i ate less at a time but ate every couple of hours. i even used a log to track meals and exercise.

    visit a nutritionist....most of what they tell you is common sense, but it helps get you on track.



    regarding exercise....find something you love so you don't become a "slave" to your weighloss goal. so, with your specific question about motivation......commit to riding 12 miles a day for 2 weeks....no excuses....just do it. after 2 weeks, if you can't motivate yourself to STOP riding, then that's the exercise for you.

    I enjoy riding, that's part of what keep me going. Also when I don't ride I feel crappy. The more I ride the happier person I am. What keeps me going is that I enjoy being a happy person and having good times with my family!

    Getting it comfortable and set up right is key.

    After I made my first bike in years (a sort of permanent loaner/trade) more comfortable with a higher stem, a barphat tape job and a different saddle, the more I rode, the more I liked it. Short rides at first. And pretty soon and hour feels like not enough.

    I love the feeling of having had a good deal of aerobic exercise after a ride, without feeling like I beat myself up the way I have with some other sports.

    As a clyde (emeritus barely) I love the light weight responsiveness of the bike and lack of rolling resistance of road bike tyres compared to MTB tyres. It just glides along relatively effortlessly -- except uphill of course. Hills become memorable challenges at first, but you even come to love them too.
    And the flats, for a clyde, can become a reward in themselves.

    Rusty, maybe cycling is not the thing for you right now. There are other ways to fitness; maybe you need to consider other options.

    Currently what motivates me, is gas at $1.25 a litre...... I remember when we paid less then this for an Imperial Gallon....
