i only ask because i want something in xl for less than $50, and, while i want bibs, they are more expensive.

I'm in shape, as in round, and bibs do much better at staying up than regular biking shorts. (220 lbs and 5'10") I also like the fact they aren't tight around the waist.

I haven't ridden in anything else but bibs for years.

If they fit well, they are superior. If you have a long torso, you may need to search for a brand that suits you.

If you're willing to spend just a bit more I think you'd like the $60 bibs from Aerotech Designs. For under $50 you won't find much in bibs - maybe the Performance or Nashbar branded ones.

Competitive Cyclist is having a close out on 2007 Team CSC bibs for $30, I think they still have XL and XXL. They usually have an ad on the right hand side of the screen.

Chances are you will need several pairs once you get to liking them. At $33 you cannot go wrong. Note, some bibs, and XL is pretty small....

i was looking for something with a 40" waist in mind. most brands seems to count that as xl. some as xxl. i wonder which the csc shorts are?

In our cycling club rides or 100+ riders, 95% wear bibs.....they help keep your lower back warm, and are just more comfortable...but I rode and raced in shorts back in the 70's and 80's ... so its your money and choice. Just make sure that the chamois is large enough and positioned such that your are NOT sitting on the edge of the chamois when you are on the bike....

After YEARS of riding with regular shorts, I was talked into buying a pair of Endura Bibs. The XL size is plenty large for me at 240 lbs and 5' 11", and should be okay if I lose another 20-25 lbs as is the plan for this year. While not 100% sold on them, the last three rides have been more comfortable with these Bibs, and my butt doesn't seem to mind the stock saddle on the 08 GF Paragon I have. The wicking action really helps, but I'll know better when it warms up more. This months riding has only been in the 50-mid 60's, we will see how they do in the 80's and 90's.

Think you are going to have to find out for yourself. I find both comfortable. Maybe it depends upon one's physical make up ? Some bibs , I get tired with the straps feeling loose, when in an aero position. Since lycra is stretchy , I really have not noticed the restrictions about the gut. Still I like them both. Some really super skinny cyclists, maybe they have problems with baggy fits? Straps will help correct that problem. And those with a fat gut might notice the restrictions about the waste of bike shorts.

I switched to bibs & I'm 5"10 235# --- IMHO They much more comfortable than shorts.

Performance Century Bibs are < $45 and have served me well.

I'd say my bibs are a little more comfortable , but the difference is not that huge. / Should you ever choose to join a team or club, get used to them. Cause, few more "Professional " cyclists will find team kit to not be bib shorts.

The team csc bibs will be way better. If they are in the ball park pricewise, I'd say order them instead.

Another great option is the top-of-the-line Voler bibs offered by Hammer Nutrition at a discount. They're worth about $110 but Hammer sells them for $50--sometimes even cheaper. they are what I ride in:

I just bought two pairs of these CSC bibs (mine were $60 ea.) from CC. Not assos in quality but excellent quality and nice fit in XL. Bibs are better for out of saddle climbing due to their stay up/in one place construction.

If you are buying top end apparel, try Assos, Descent higher end stuff and Capo. Will have for a very long time. Theirs other, these are just my favorite.

go one inch smaller or go with my exact size now nowing that the inseam will probably be longer (bad for my short height) and that my waist may just lose that 1" sometime soon?

You want it tight, but not so tight that it digs into the skin. If it is too loose, the wicking is non-existant
