been lurking and finally decicing to post
Hey all I have been lurking for a while. I am finally getting up the courage to post. The clydes/athenas seem like a much nicer laid back group than the ss/fixed and road bike group on here. I decided to start biking 3 months ago after hitting the 240lb mark also to save gas. I am down to 220 now. My goal is to get down to 190 and tehn we will see from there. I have been a vegetarian for about a while also. I got me a new bike earlier this week. My family got me a Giant ocr1 with upgraded ultegra derailers for dads day. I was previously riding a concorde fixed and a panasonic dx5000 or whatever teh number. I was putting about 70 miles on the 2 a week. I have started riding to work and back on it. Since sunday night i have rode 132 miles. I am taking a break from it today because i have to take my daughter to her g'mas. It is on the way to work so no since in riding all the way back home and wasting that liquid gold. I will continue my ride friday and saturday which should put me at 200 miles for the week. Far better than the 70 miles i was previously riding....One problem i have with my commute is on the way back home there is a killer hill that just destroys me. I can get to work in 40-45 minutes. The ride home i take it easy and then i hit the hill a mile and a half from my house and it take about 1hr and a half. It just kills my knees. Any hill climbing pointers would be great.

I couldnt decide between the ocr 1 the specialized allez elite and the seqouia elite. They were all 3 very comfy. I picked the ocr1 because it had the same shimano 105 drivetrain but was 30 spd instead of 27 spd. I also like the fact that i can still put a rack on it and it still has somewhat of a road geometry. I got the ultegra derailers for $30 from a friend that took them off his rig brand new earlier this year. My lbs installed them for free.
I am waiting on my lbs to build my wheels which will be 32 spoke front and 36 spoke rear. Shimano ultegra hubs and velocity rims. I should be able to pick them up friday.

Welcome to the group! You might want to stop by the commuting forum as well, if you haven't already.
Hill climbing - staying in a low gear and keeping up a high cadence will help your knees. Keep at it - you'll improve.
There's no such thing as a wasted bike ride! As for the gas, well, you'll have to use it riding home in any event...

Could you plot a route around the hill? Check on Bikely for an alternate route, or plot your own.

Nah i would rather just keep at it (the hill) and get stronger. I have tackled all other hills on my ride except this particular one. I'm not going to let it beat me.
