Kona Smoke 2-9
What is the opinion on a Kona Smoke 2-9 bike? I'd like to hear opinions and comments about this bike for a 410+ clyde.

Others may disagree but at 410 you might be better served by buying a Surly 29er frame and then having them build up a tough-as-nails wheelset for it.

IT all boils down to the wheels. I'd recommend a 40-48 spoke Velocity Deep-V wheel with DT spokes. Your LBS should be able to build you those wheels. If they can't go to a shop that will.

At your weight you will be fine, you'll just need to have the rear wheel beefed up a bit. I'd suggest a Velocity Deep-V or a Salsa Delgado Cross rim with DT spokes. Since the stock wheel/hub is a 36h, you can re-use it. I'm one of the resident wheel killers, and I'd have no problems riding such a wheel if I was at that weight. I rode a stock 36h non-handbuilt wheel on a Specialized Hardrock at over that weight, and I was NOT nice to it. Several thousand miles later the single-wall rim finally cracked, but yeah, I'm a 36h convert.
If you have the money, go with a 40h or 48h. But if you don't, 36 will do just fine. See if your LBS can get DT Alpine III spokes in the proper length.

LOL no kidding! I'm sure you live pretty close to me as well, as that's the area I'm in. I'm also rid of my other car soon, this biking thing has "set me free" from cars, so to speak .
