Advice for a friend

I have a friend who is pushing 325# and is about 6'2". He wants to get into a bike, and I suggested to him a road bike because of the increased ease of pedaling. Well, he is wondering if a road bike is OK for him, because of him living on a dirt road. So, then, I thought about a Cruiser. I don't know much about Cruisers to offer advice, and I'm wondering if anyone could offer any.

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

I'd suggest a Mountain Bike or Cyclocross bike, personally, tending toward the mountain bike or such. A cruiser will not be the best choice, IMO. Weak wheels, single gear or at most an internal hub gear setup, likely a 3 speed.

I'd personally suggest the Specialized Hardrock Sport......(Big surprise there. ) Put a set of semislicks on it for a mix of pavement and gravel roads and he'll get a nice stable, robust bike.
