advice please

Well I am about 215 pounds, I was body building for a while. I am currently looking for a bike, new or used. I was looking at a few bikes that I thought were nice but now I am not so sure so I thought I would ask for advice. Bike shop says a size 54cm is right for me but others say it differs from bike to bike. They tried to sell me a trek 2.1 but that is 50% over budget ;p, it was a 1000 dollars. Just getting into the sport and want something kind of nice but I don't have a lot to spend. Happily ride a used bike if I find one available. As far as what bikes I like. My favorite bike as far as look is the Scott addict ltd which i promise to buy someday lol. Lets admit it cosmetics do come into play when purchasing. But for my first bike it doesn't matter much.

Bikes I was looking at:

Scott speedster s60 or maybe a used s40 because i see the parts for the s60 are lacking

Ironhorse Triumph 5.0

Ironhorse Victory 3.0

I agree it was a nice bike and it is 500 below the retail price but I just don't have a 1000 to spend right now. If I could find a nice used one I would be just as happy but even used I would be looking at 800.

good deal?

Is this a good deal?

53cm Specialized Allez Elite

$800

I purchased this bike from Shickluna Bikes in Sept of 2003 for over $1350. I wanted to get into road biking for the exercise and for something new. It ends up i have less than 200 miles on the bike. I always found myself back on the trails or doing some other sport. After collecting dust i think it's time to find a new owner. Last spring i upgraded the seat, stem, and added the reclined riding bar. All together i've invested over $1700 on this brand new bike. It's a steal at $800. I have the receipt and owners manual that will go with the bike. don't miss this opportunity....

here's what Specialized has to say about the Elite

Racing, fast riding, fun riding or touring, the Allez Elite is a high-test jack-of-all-trades. Choose from seven standard frame sizes and partner up with the Shimano 105/Ultegra drivetrain. Like the rest of our Allez family, the Elite has racing-inspired compact geometry for better comfort, better handling and greater pedaling efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, the Elite's fully butted A1 Premium Aluminum tubing, high-modulus carbon fiber fork, Ritchey bar and stem and Cr-Mo railed Body Geometry saddle each do their part to ensure maximum return on your energy output.

A1-XX Premium Aluminum fully butted frame with compact geometry for better handling, more standover clearance and improved power transfer

Specialized C-2 high modulus carbon fork with 7075 alloy steerer

Ritchey Aero Comp wheels are light, strong and aerodynamic

Available as frameset-only in select markets.

The Allez is compact geometry, so it has a longer top tube. 53 CM may be a bit on the low side for you on height, though. All that said, I have an Allez and I'm 6'1" w/ a 30.5 inch inseam and I ride the XL frame, 58 CM Seat tube/5901/2 Cm Top tube. I love the bike, it's crazy fast, and handles like a Ferrari.

Your height and inseam please so we can make a reasonable estimate?

These are estimates, I am 5'10 and my inseam is about 32 or 33 inches. These are estimates as I don't have a fit stick or measuring tape just a 24 inch ruler. ;p

If you already have it, how does it feel? Frankly, I'd keep it if it feels right, and enjoy the Allez.

I don't have it yet, those are the pictures provided by the seller. I'm hoping to trade some electronics and cash for it if possible.

Have you looked at a Giant OCR 1,2 or 3.
The OCR 3 is the cheapest and that is what I started on. Good solid bike for a decent price.

OK, well, the price is a bit higher that what I'd be willing to pay for it. I'd offer $650 as a trial balloon.....if the fit was right. The standover on a 54 CM frame, for example is 30.2 inches, and the 52 CM has 29.2" standover. There isn't a 53 cm frame made, even, and that looks like a 52.

Top tube length is 53.7 cm if the 52, and right at 54.8 if the 54 CM. Ride the bike before you buy it if you can. I think it's liable to be a tad small though, unless you like the "Eddie Merx" fit school of thought. Personally, I tend toward a more relaxed French Fit.

Sadly it has already been sold. Yes I was looking at the giant ocr. After a lot of research and thought I think my best interest would be to save and get something that I can ride for 2 or 3 years and not need to upgrade. With that said would it be foolish to purchase an all carbon bike with my build "weight"? I'm looking at the Fezzari fore cr2. Don't bust fezzari just because of the costco name. They don't do that anymore. I have ridden their mountain bikes and I have to say they are quite enjoyable. ;p

Price: $1499.00 thats a steal for these components I believe.

Might be a good deal but the question is if you can afford it. If a 1000 dollar bike was 50% over max budget this one is 125% over your max.

I might be selling my 2006 Giant OCR 3 very soon. I just purchased a bike off ebay and should be getting it in a few days. If all is good with the new bike my giant will be for sale. The giant is size M, blue & white and has about 700 miles on it. It is in perfect condition. Let me know if this might be something you are interested in.

Yea I was thinking I was just going to save then I realized if I saved it would end up around the time of the end of season sales and I could get a much better bike for that price and not fezzari ;p I don't know what I was thinking. How much are you asking for your Giant?

You can pm me or e-mail me.

I just got back into road riding with a Scott S40, which I beleive is the S60 with nicer components paid $820 for it. So far I am loving it. I have roughly 125miles in 3 weeks and have had nothing but minor issues. Cable strech on the front derailleur and the valve snapped off the front tube so I could not add air. The bike has been comfortable with a max of a 30mile ride so far. Saddle has been pretty comfortable once adjusted to me. The frame feels solid it is fun on a climb and a down hill. I see this bike lasting me a long time and giving me a lot of fun. That is just my 2cents regarding the s60/s40

+1 I am also a big fan of the Giant OCR series. I ride an OCR Limited and my Bro-in-law rides an OCR 2. IMHO, the OCR 3 or OCR 2 are a better value than many of the other entry level bikes out there....
