    3rd ride (finally)

    I still can't seem to get myself to ride everyday, but decided to definitely ride to my karate classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I figure it's a start. I'm not sure I am going to count the ride there because it seems like I am on the brake the whole time. I decided to take the path that runs through the park across the street from my house since I really didn't like riding on the street. It turns out that the path through the park is not level, like I thought. I really haven't figured out how to shift the gears to something that allows me to actually pedal instead of coasting when I am going downhill (probably more like down a speed bump). No matter what gear I am in it doesn't feel like I am doing anything. I think I am just moving faster than I can pedal. Anyway, coming back kills me, especially after taking a karate class.


    I had to walk my bike the last block to my house because I just couldn't make it up the block. I mapped the routes I took:

    Anyway, it felt good. I'm going to do a little searching and see if I can find someplace level so maybe on the weekend I can go out for a while.

    froggy, it takes time to develop the habit. Shoot initially for even every other day. Just getting out on the ride is the tough part. One you're out, you start to have fun, right? Build in that and soon enough, you'll start feeling restless on the days you don't ride.

    Hey Froggy - It's the Bee. Good for you! Can you imagine a few months ago - how better/healthier you will be having ridden the bike to/from Karate class? It will add years to your life! This has to be better than drivinig. Plus - I bet you are proud of yourself cause I know you were feeling bad for not riding. Now look at you!

    I am probably a tad compulsive about the biking these days - but man it is so nice to have an incredibky healthy hobby! we are cyclist! hear us roar! We are also part of a group of people that are all starting to bike and get into it. I have met so many women that are all buying a bike - and riding for the first time in years! They all say it is hard....but all are back for more!

    Getting out was definitely the hard part and once I was moving I really did enjoy it. I am scheduled for knee surgery in October and I figure the biking part will help build some muscle which will quicken my recovery rate. It is hard but I think I can really get into it.

    there you go! The first couple times are the hardest, I agree. Once you start building up a bit, it gets really fun! I went from having to take a rest on my 10 mile commute both in the morning and afternoon to lamenting that it is not long enough! I am on vacation right now in NH, and brought my bike so that I would not miss out on riding.

    Good luck on the knee surgery too! I know that biking is waaaaay better on my knees than running was. TBH I can't take the pounding on my knees day after day-this was a major factor in me plumping up a bit. For me, biking has the reverse effect-my knees feel better! Have you spoken with your Dr. to make sure that cycling is fine for you? Also, albeit stationary probably in the beginning, cycling could be a part of your PT in recovery.
