Earlier today I happened upon an accident scene, moments after the fact, involving what looked to be a 14-16 yr old kid on a bike and an SUV. The accident was within several hundred yards of a hopsital that my wife happens to be a memeer of the OR staff.

Things didn't look good, and last time I spoke with my wife, a few minutes ago, the kid hadn't gotten to the OR. There is another hospital near by, so it's possible they took him there. Seems unlikely with a major trauma unit that close though. Sadly, I don't think the kid made it.

I have no knowledge of the cirumstances surrounding the accident, since I got there after the fact. I do know that there was no helmet to be seen anywhere. Fault seems a trivial thing though, he was just a kid.

So anyway, please take care of yourselves out there.

Same type situation (almost exactly) here in Richardson 2 months ago. Found out later that the kid didn't make it. Looked to be about 10 yrs old.:(

Yes, a couple of months ago was a bad time in the area. I think we lost 5 riders or so in a weeks time.

It was towards the end of my wife's shift, and she doesn't handle kids well, that's why she doesn't work truama cases if she doesn't have to. I still haven't heard anyting yet or found anything.

As a former Paramedic I have seen way too many of these scenerios. Lives end and change forever in the blink of an eye. I will say however that most of the accidents that I worked involved younger unskilled riders that didn't know how to ride in traffic. Many of them involved cyclists on sidewalks that were never seen by cars pulling out onto the road. So please, never ride on sidewalks if you can help it, and know the laws pertaining to cyclists in your area, and most importantly...always ride defensively.

It's not trivial at all. I'm sorry a child may have lost his life. The best way to insure you don't lose yours is to cycle predictably and defensively. Predictibly means acting like a vehicle when you are with vehicles. Defensively means being aware of your situation, the road conditions, and other vehicles, and anticipating problems before they arise. Child cyclists are often unpredictable and aggressive, hence the fact they make up the bulk of bike/vehicle accidents.
