    First Ride!

    I rode for the first time in 10+ years yesterday after I picked up my new bike on Saturday. It felt really good...even with a sore butt and hands. I'm definitely liking it much more than the elliptical machine. I'm really wanting to keep up with the weight loss and get outside more even with fall/winter approaching.

    I was able to do 8 miles on a bike path, and I probably could have done a bit more but I figured I should head back while still feeling good instead of getting out too far and not being able to bike back. I'm hoping to get out tomorrow or Wednesday evening and get up to double digits! This forum has been great for advice and inspiration.

    The miles will come as you ride more. Last year I started at 10-12 miles and yesterday I rode 50. Congrats on the new ride and getting ut there.

    HI,
    I just started ridding again too, and I am hooked big time. put nearly 500 miles the first month.
    I really love the feeling of ridding hard and feeling the bike move under you like its part of you.
    I found that good ridding pants are real important to that back side.
    I also found some shock absorbing grips for my mountian bike this prevents hand pain and weakness from pinched nerves in the palm.
    If I miss a day I really feel upset. I wish I had bought my bike at a LBS cause set up is critical to pleasure and comfort. If your seat is off it can really cause problems, same for handle height.
    2 weeks in to the bike and I ordered shoes and candy sl pedals from crankbrothers.
    My next purchase is winter clothing., that bike island has pretty good deals if you need shoes , pedals,
    pants shippings free.

    THis site is the best , I Haven't seen and real flamers here, very gentle prodding whilest your in your learning curve.
    Be real careful with CARS. that was the only scary part for me, some people are not very good drivers and they don't see bike riders at all. I use flashing lights front and rear 24 hours a day when I ride and I stil have close calls.

    Yeah, I spoke with my LBS and they did say there were a few things I could adjust, but to give it another week or two to see how things work out. If anything were really bad, he did say to bring the bike back right away to see what we can change. My only problem is that I'm a bit budget constrained, but there are so many cool things I would love to get for myself or my bike.

    I'm staying off the street for now and driving to the path. I was able to stay fairly straight, but I did wobble a bit. Also, when trying to take one hand off the bars to either shake it out or act like I was going to signal, I really couldn't stay straight. I definitely want to get used to the bike before I go out on the streets. I've been reading up on my state and city's cycling laws and plan to get some lights and a reflective vest before street riding as well. Those will be pretty important as the daylight is going away.

    I figure for moment though, I've got a bike and a helmet so I must be doing something right.

    Sounds like you've got the bug!

    Mrs. Zoxe and I started riding again after a 10yr break back in late July. We're running about 50mi/wk now (low compared to some of the folks on this forum who ride more than that each day!), and I've taken off 13lbs as of last Friday.

    Bike paths are great. Between subdivisions connecting to ours and bike paths that have been added in recent construction, Mrs. Zoxe and I can easily ride 8-12mi without having to go onto a "real" street for more than 100 yards. We couldn't have done this 5yrs ago.

    Congrats on getting out there. It does feel good doesn't it? Almost like being a kid again.

    Yep, you have all you need to get to get there

    In time, the bike shorts area really good idea, either the lycra road shorts or the mountain bike cargo shorts with the padding sewn in. Your butt will love you forever!

    Eight miles for your first ride is a great accomplishment. My first ride was 4 miles and I was seeing anyone of a number of differing religous figures after the 2nd mile It gets better, and the feeling totally rocks!
