Cross-training? Oh that's when you blow a tire and have a 10 mile walk back to your car, right?
Seriously though. I don't during the summer. Starting in the fall I introduce upper body weight lifting. As winter sets in I'll move to indoor cycling (very boring), increase the upper body lifting and then add lower body weight training as well.

Yes hiking counts. I used to be an avid trail runner/hiker in PA.
I still run a bit, play basketball and lift. Been tossing around the possibility of training martial arts once my schedule becomes regular next month.

So, if person A writes, "I am commuting and I need to carry a laptop and a toolkit and a business suit and groceries on the way home," and person B responds, "Pretty much the only way to do that is panniers," and then person C chimes in and says, "What? Why are you telling me that I have to have panniers just to do my weekend recreational rides on the MUP???", then that's a perfectly reasonable interpretation and comment to make, and person B is at fault and should have sent his/her comments to person A via email or PM. Got it.

I weight train and run at the gym. However, I don't consider that crosstraining - just other aspects of my regiment.
At the Runner's World forums upper body strength training is highly regarded as it prevents the atrophy that many believe occurs as a result of the body attempting to adapt to the energy demands of the legs for running.
I bet that in the serious training forum here this sentiment would be echoed. Although, I am thinking that the broad chest of serious strength training is viewed as a negative for wind resistance!
