Lets play match the seatpost to the bike
Here's the deal: I have 2 bikes and 3 seatposts and I need you to tell me what to put where:
The bikes are:
(A) Raleigh Detour Deluxe. This is a 700c hybrid bike set up as a greenway/commuter bike w/ a rigid fork, disc brakes, racks, fenders, dynamo lights etc.
(B) Motobecane Messenger. This is a lightweight steel road/track bike set up as a fixed gear and used for general tom-foolery around town.
The 3 seatposts are:
(1) Suspended seatpost w/ spring tension adjutment. This came on the Raleigh.
(2) Carbon Fiber seatpost. Impulse purchase from Nashbar. Light weight and it has the "Oooooh. Carbon." bling-factor
(3) Basic black powdercoated aluminium seatpost. This came on the Motobecane.
Both bikes use a 27.2mm post so these should all be interchangable.
Which seat post would you put on each bike and which one goes back in the parts box?
.

Aluminum post on the Raleigh. Commuter bikes don't need a carbon post.
Carbon post on the Motobecane. It's stripped down and light already; why not make it lighter?
Suspension post in the trash can. Yeah, the trash can is probably a little wide for the post, but don't bother trying to shim it. Just let it rattle down to the bottom, and the sanitation workers will take care of the rest.

Do you have a car? Put the suspension post under the front seat. If someone gives you any trouble, you can whack them with it.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

I say you should rig the susp. post to fail in such a way that whoever tries to ride it gets a roofing nail through the taint... then use it as 'bait' for seatpost theives by leaving it outside held on the Raleigh with a quick release.
But, as others said, alu on raleigh, cf on moto - alu is functional, cf is just for fun.

How much do you weigh? I wouldn't trust any of them for very long. I'd ditch them all and get a Thomson. I had a powder-coated aluminum snap off on me while riding 2 years ago. Not a comforting feeling having your butt go out from under you.
